Barish Golland was born in 1977 in Istanbul Turkey, to Canadian and American parents. He studied cello in the Arts Program at Canterbury High School and jazz piano with David Hildinger in Ottawa, Canada. He then went on to study Composition at McGill University in the Faculty of Music from 1996-1998 with a minor in jazz piano studies.

Barish has performed on cello with the Ottawa Youth Orchestra, on jazz piano with the Nepean All-City Jazz Band and has performed his own compositions in concert.

Barish is currently composing choir music and spiritual songs for congregational worship, and continues to explore modal jazz improvisation.

Compositions

Style

Barish's early style (1993-1998) was influenced by modal jazz and modern classical music. Composers that influenced him in this period included Gyorgy Ligeti, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich and Keith Jarrett. Currently Barish is exploring vocal music influenced by gospel and jazz harmony.
