Introduction to the wiki

A wiki is a system which allows users to easily create content for a website. This may range from a group effort devoted to a single article, to one person authoring a profile about themselves. Save for a few protected pages, all users are permitted to make alterations to wiki content.

Worried someone will change your page?

You may be concerned that others could make unwarranted or even malicious alterations to a page you have written, or helped to write. There is no need to worry about this kind of eventuality since the wiki saves each individual page revision separately, even old iterations going back months or years. Changes can be "rolled back" (i.e. reversed) via the history tab visible on any page.

Guidelines and rules

While we encourage users to be creative and autonomous in terms of how they approach creating and editing wiki pages, there are guidelines laid down by the site staff which must be adhered to. These are laid out on a separate page.

How can I contribute?

  • To create a new page, you can use the form below. Type the desired article name into the box, then click Submit. Please note that if you choose an article name which already exists, you will be taken to the edit screen for that article.

  • To edit an existing page, simply click the "edit" tab at the top.

Structure of a wiki

One of the main reasons wikis are powerful is because they allow content to be linked, meaning that individual pages will contain links to other pages within the wiki. The main benefit of this is helping users navigate to related content. An auxiliary benefit is helping search engines such as Google and Yahoo add new pages to their search indexes.

Discussing an article

If you wish to discuss an article with fellow users, you can click the "discussion" tab. This will take you to a forum discussion thread.

Quick reference

  • To create a new section: ==section title==
  • To create a new subsection: ===subsection title===
  • To link to an existing article with the desired link title: [[Young Composers|Home Page]] (will display as Home Page)
  • To link to any 'non'-wiki page with the desired link title: [http://www.example.com/ Link Title]
  • To create bulleted lists: * Bullet point text
  • To bold text: '''Bold text''' (three single quotes on either side)
  • To italicize text: ''Italic text'' (two single quotes on either side)

Tips

  • To learn more about wiki syntax, try clicking "edit" (or "view source", if protected) on existing pages. You will be shown the source code behind the page.
  • You can edit the whole page by clicking edit at the top , or you can click edit in a particular section to modify only that section.
  • Creating sections and subsections will automatically lead to the creation of a table of contents at the beginning of the article. To bypass this convention, include a line of code at the beginning or end of the article as follows: __NOTOC__
