Biography

Steven was born in Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. He started learning the piano since the age of 11. He learned from a few teachers including, Elly Yap, Yoyo Tjong, May Lim, Dee Yinn Leong, Sam Fee Khoon, Loo Bang Hean and Chuan Wu. In addition to that he had learned basic composition techniques from Leong Dee Yinn and learned briefly from a Malaysian composer, Adeline Wong.

He is now studying in Adelaide University, The Elder Conservatorium of Music taking Bachelor of Music Studies (Composition).

Music

Early Compositions

Most of Steven's early compositions were inspired mainly by Mozart. He studied a lot of Mozart's scores including his Symphonies, string quartet, concertos and other ensemble works to imitate his structure, harmonies and others. He also studied the orchestration mainly from Mozart. All of these were developed when he was in Malaysia.

Steven's music teacher, Leong, like many other teachers and professors, often persuaded him to write more music from the avant-garde or modern genre, but he doesn't seem to enjoy it as much. On top of that, he finds it hard to compose without tonality or notation. So he continued with the Mozartean style. Some of his compositions were those of the flute concerto, bassoon concerto, wind octet, piano trio, chamber symphonies and some other pieces.

In addition to this composition, he, as the arranger of the chamber orchestra in his school, arranges many of the pieces played by the chamber orchestra. He also arranged one of his composed piece, Epic, for the orchestra to be performed in a concert and the presentation day.

Recent Compositions

Recent compositions include those of film score sounding music. Inspired by the filmscore of The Memoirs of a Geisha by John Williams, Steven started dreaming of becoming a film scorer. His first attempt in this was a Prologue "Epic" which was premiered by his school's chamber orchestra in some private school concert. Some other works like Overtures No.1, 2 and 3 (Untitled Filmscore) are written mainly in the style of filmscore. Alongside these, he also wrote a piece for his IGCSE Music exam in the minimalism style entitled The Mystic Forest.

After this brief infatuation of film music, Steven would occasionally return to compose classical or romantic styled pieces.

Present Compositions

Steven has just recovered from a non productive year of 2006, where he did not compose any pieces at all. He is currently writing a Piano Concerto in G minor.

Musical Influence

Steven's main influence came from the composer he admired the most, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. All of his early works, although rather unsuccessful (like most composers), were written to imitate his style. His other influences were from composers like Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Adeline Wong and film composers like John Williams.
