Template talk:Thisisaprofile

From Young Composers

Hello, I'd like to talk about this template.

What's its purpose exactly? All profiles already have been categorized and thereby there would be no need for marking them once more.--Misha 13:38, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

Hi there! The template was basically put in place to discern pages like Andrew Hsieh from pages like Edvard Grieg. So that, if someone browses our wiki, they know they're viewing one of our members' profiles. Indeed the profiles are categorized, but not everyone will notice this! We want to make it explicitly clear.

Hmm.. what really bothers me about the page about Edvard Grieg is that Wikipedia on English language already has one article about him, which is at present in much better state than ours I might add. Why do we need to have it here, in lower quality, instead extending the one that already exists? This may be applied to another topics as well. If our goal is to provide informations about music theory, composers and another topics as musicians, we could cooperate on Wikipedia. Contributions will exist on Wikipedia but can be explicitly listed on our user pages here as well.

On the other side, I thought the main idea of this site was primarily presenting the young composers. Its name implies that and it does have such a reputation since idon'tknowwhen. Why not to mark the articles about famous composers instead of the other ones?--Misha 07:32, 28 November 2007 (EST)

I don't agree about the Wikipedia article being of higher quality. It has biographical information, which doesen't do anyone any good, and the music section focuses on Grieg's most popular works, rather than focusing on those that are of high quality. (the violin sonata in C minor, for example, doesen't even get a mention!!) If Edvard Grieg is to feature on our (composition) wiki, the article should focus on his music, with particular prominence given to his high quality works - it shouldn't be populist, we don't need to know more about In the Hall of The Mountain King. Of course, our article is minimal at the moment, but I'm hoping it'll grow into something.

With time, I hope we can establish some kind of standard template for the articles on composers. It will, hopefully, differ quite a bit from the one on wikipedia.

As for your other concern, yes, you're right. However, the site upgrade in the near future will render the profiles redundant as each user will get a myspace-like profile page which will be much more functional than the wiki profiles.

Hehe, well Wikipedia isn't a Bible. :) If you think it can be better, you're welcome to edit it (of course, the wish/will/motivation is an important factor). One more (+) for Wikipedia is the fact it is among top 10 destinations on web. If you want to put on web something that may educate or whatever people (in a encyclopedic tone and style), it should be there. In difference to the famous composers, we 'unknown' ones don't have entrance there, cause we're (or most of us) still irrelevant from an encyclopedia's viewpoint.
However, I see the template will be not moving from our pages (I got it right, yes?), and therefore I request its re-designing and implementing it in a more aesthetical way to our pages. (I may even give a suggestion myself soon) But, oh my... now I took a look at it. Have you guys put it in every profile like this <center>{{thisisaprofile}}</center>, instead adding the center tags to the template source and then adding just {{thisisaprofile}} to our profiles?--Misha 14:13, 28 November 2007 (EST)

The problem is, we want to create an encyclopedia for composers. Young Composers is for composers, but Wikipedia is for the general public, thus me editing Wikipedias article would be in vain - it wouldn't be what they're looking for, and it wouldn't be what we're interested in creating.

We'd love suggestions! You should post in the Wiki forum, if so - this place is pretty secluded!

*blush* unfortunately, only one of our staff members knows wiki code properly, and she seems to be quite busy at the moment. This will no doubt me corrected over time.

I see. Well then I guess you'll have nothing against putting few CSS gadgets there and there. Watch me.--Misha 15:34, 28 November 2007 (EST)
