A while (maybe a year or more) when I first started seriously considering composing, I wrote 2 seperate fairly easy short piano pieces. They're not technically my first compositions, but the first noteworthy ones . I am relatively proud of both of them. I think they both involve a certain level of sophistication. I wrote the first (True Happiness) quite spontaneously and it took me like 2 nights of working. The second (I Can See Now) was written in a state of extreme sadness and depression.

I lost the original Finale files when my computer crashed recently, so I had to scan in old paper copies and fix it up. It might not have been worth it . I hate losing stuff.

I just became aware of the "posting rules", sorry. Here's some explanation. It might be too lengthy

In the first, True Happiness, I meant it to sound big and impressive in CM and then after the whole big phrase is over it comes to a big, unexpected Am chord. Then it goes into Bm. I love the mood it creates there. Then into GM for the last section. I was disappointed in the opening section and I don't know what I'd do differently. hehe, maybe just add more notes! The last section I'm also a little disappointed in. It seemed like such a great musical idea, but it didn't turn out the way I'd hoped. The title refers to an irony: that "true happiness" is unattainable, and that every time you think you will be the happiest you'll ever be in your life, it doesn't turn out right or something goes right. Such is represented by the Am chord. Then, to make up for it, you try to fight your way back up to be happier, and end up being glad about a different thing or in a different way. I wrote this basically one note at a time, NOT all worked out in my head ahead of time.

The second, I Can See Now, was written immediately after I'd been denied the position of "Drum Major", something I perhaps wanted too badly which 'I see now' isn't the end of the world. I didn't name it until a few days or a week after the denial. At the time, all I could feel was sadness and that's all I wanted to portray in the song. My first thought was to make every single chord a minor chord, not matter what. Then I came to my senses a little. This sounds so corny, but its true: its ironic that when I turned to music when it was music which denied me. I took me only one night to write. Only the beginning part was worked out in my head before I started writing, the rest was done one note at a time.
