Schostakowitch "sounds best" in his 10th symphony (a work considered by many musicologists and historians as one of his finest), and I don't think anyone could say that was a work "influenced" by Mahler.

In musical criticism, when issues of craft and technical consideration are set aside, what remains is more subjective. However, until technical issues are dealt with, the subjective portion bears considerably less weight.
