Yea, I remember doing the auditions for University of Texas and North Texas. It's kinda fun. If I remember correctly (it's been many years.) For composition, you are required to submit some work of yours. You are also required to be able to play an instrument and audition with that instrument. Although, I think they weight your performance ability less than your composing ability.

I think one of the key reasons that you have to be able to play an instrument at UNT is because you are required to be part of an ensemble of some sort for, I think, every semester.

Also something to keep in mind, if they don't take you as a composition field when you apply, you can just go in as a regular ole instrumental music major, and then reapply each semester and see if they'll take you.
