I appreciate the music and dance but there was a bit of a hint of sexual deviance; gave the audience the "wink - wink"  I'm guessing they did not allow women to perform.

You are right Michael,
The women were not allowed to perform on stage at the time of Louis XIV, "Le Roi Soleil". The movie is over 2 hours long and describes how the young king of France performs the famous number called "Ballet de la Nuit".
Louis was a good amateur dancer, but stopped to dance when other more professional dancers appeared. Louis could not compete with them, he also did not have much time because he had to rule the kingdom, which was a full time job. He spent about 12-14 hours every day behind his desk, administrating France.
It's a new fantastic movie that I recommend you to watch. Lully is very well portrayed together with the famous Moliere, who wrote all those famous comedies.
Unfortunately, Lully died of blood poisoning. He hit his foot while conducting. At that time conducting was executed with a staff (a precursor to the baton) ,that was beaten on the floor. Lully got too excited that time and the sharp staff pierced straight through his shoe and into his flesh. He died shortly afterwoulds! It's a gruesome story...
Glad you could hear my "Royal Timpani" - "Tambour Royal", that I composed last night.
I was inspired by a scene from the movie when Lully is conducting a Royal ceremony sitting on a white horse equipped with 2 big drums. It's a very powerful scene. The brass is mighty, and Lully is conducting the whole event, while both riding and conducting with the drums at the same time! it's just hilarious to see!
