Cool 2nd revision - Manon Lescaut

Instrumental Miniature for : Oboe d'amore, Viola, Contrabassoon, Organ and Harp.

Welcome to listen to this 2nd revision of Manon Lescaut which was inspired by the story of Manon Lescaut.
The misterious low tones of the Viola narrates the tragic story of Manon for us.

Plot
Set in France and Louisiana in the early 18th century, the story follows the hero le Chevalier Des Grieux and his lover Manon Lescaut. Des Grieux comes from a noble and landed family, but forfeits his hereditary wealth and incurs the disappointment of his father by running away with Manon. In Paris, the young lovers enjoy a blissful cohabitation, while Des Grieux struggles to satisfy Manon's taste for luxury. He scrounges together money by borrowing from his unwaveringly loyal friend Tiberge and from cheating gamblers. On several occasions, Des Grieux's wealth evaporates (by theft, in a house fire, etc.), prompting Manon to leave him for a richer man because she cannot stand the thought of living in penury.
The two lovers finally settle down in New Orleans, where the virtual absence of class differences allows them to live in idyllic peace for a while. But when Des Grieux reveals their unmarried state to the Governor and asks to be wed with Manon, the Governor's nephew sets his sights on winning Manon's hand. In despair, Des Grieux challenges the Governor's nephew to a duel and knocks him unconscious. Thinking he had killed the man and fearing retribution, the couple flee New Orleans and venture into the wilderness of Louisiana, hoping to reach a neighboring English settlement. Manon dies of exposure and exhaustion the following morning, and Des Grieux returns to France to become a cleric after burying his beloved.

Well, the Viola part goes a bit high. It's not impossible to go that high, but it would be difficult for the violist. Maybe split it up into violin and viola, so you can have those high notes and those low notes.

Good job on the range of the d'amore. You nailed it! The d'amore part is perfectly playable. Those are the only two parts I really looked at in depth. You didn't seem to go out of the range of the bassoon.

I don't really understand the function of the harp, though. It would barely be heard over the other instruments, and besides, it's not doing anyhting independant, just playing the same thing as the organ.

The organ part is a mess and pretty much unplayable. What notation program do you use? It looks like this is just a midi output.

I'm not really sure if you are composing for performance, or just composing for it to remain electronic music. It has good structure and you have some great use of counterpoint in there. It holds up ok if its just electronic music for something, but it doesn't quite hold up as concert music.

I've seen a lot of your work, so I know what you can do, so I know you won't find any offense in my advice, but this one didn't really get me like the others, if you know what I mean. Keep it up!

Hi Oboehazzard!

I'm still composing, this piece will be expanded since I got some new material coming.
The organ will be more playable in the final revised score.
You were wondrin about the harp, I use it mainly for colouring purposes. I don't want it to dominate to much. Just to be in the background.
I will think about the range of the viola of course.

So long
Fredrik

Hi, Fredrik,

nice music! Let me offer some constructive (mostly negative) feedback...

1) The orchestration doesn't work very well at times. There are a lot of times when instruments need to 'blend in', but, although I like your counterpoint, they stick out too much.

2) The score is a mess. I couldn't follow past the first measure after seeing so many mistakes. Also, couldn't you make a pdf? The format isn't very viewer-friendly either.

3) Nice instrumentation (even though the orchestration spoils it at times)!!!!!

4) The piece seems VERY unfinished...

Cheers!

Hi Manossq!

Patience, the final version is just about to be completed.
The instrumentation is going to be just like I want it when all the little pieces are at the right place.

Thanks for lending an ear
Fredrik

Hi, there, Fredrik,

I had stumbled across a lot of your works, but without a score I didn't comment. I hope the final version will have a pdf score included?

I'll gladly lend an ear again when this is finished!

This is highly annoying. I can't seem to load the esnips page. I can't hear the music nor examine it. Well on the other hand others have listened to it, so I guess it must be my internet going … again.

P.S Since this is not the final version shouldn't this be in the Writer's Block?

Tjänare Saiming!

This piece is finished, it's just that this is one more variations of the theme that I have allready used in my St. Louisiana Passion.

Since I posted, new ideas have come up.
So I will upload this new variation as soon as I'm done with it. It's a prolonged version of the Manon Lescaut.

Vi hörs
Fredrik
