crud, actually I just realized it wasn't even the midi itself, but when I opened the midi in Bandstand (NI) that's where the problem begins. I've had it happen before, but no matter how much I save and change this particular piece I can't get it to go away. erg. here's an example of what bandstand is producing from the midi:

you can hear the weird thing right near the beginning of this fragment of the piece (and why it annoys me, hahaha)

fragment with problem

So maybe it's not the midi...but I don't know...it's a string quartet, so I don't think there's anything unusual in channel 10. There's something happening with the midi that weirds out bandstand. So maybe no one can help me...or...I'm so tired right now, lol, I don't know what I'm saying.
