Symphonic Competition
THE PROMPT: Each composer will create one movement of a symphony, using a full symphonic orchestra. This one movement will contain at least one main linking theme, and other motives and thematic elements. The movement must be one out of a number of movements, as most symphonies go. Plans must be presented for other movements, 3 minimum. Skill must be shown in areas of: development of themes, cohesiveness, creativity, instrumentation, overall effect, and score preparation. The music will be submitted in any form, with a stress on the score, not on a sound file. The judges will judge mainly on the score, looking for attention to clarity, detail, and overall preparation. This competition is for the preparation of composers going public with their music.
THE ENSEMBLE: The piece must include at least one part of each instrument: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet (or Cornet), Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, optional percussion, optional piano/harp/celeste, and a full string section. Anything in addition is acceptable.
THE DEADLINE: 23:59 EST FRIDAY MARCH 30th
A NOTE: Composers must submit NEW MUSIC ONLY. Music that has been started earlier than the competition opening cannot be submitted, with the exception of pieces that still need at least 90% work or so.
