Ok, here are some piano compositions I did last night (and a bit today) for a member of the forums, Avacado Guy. He had 8 poems plus an "interlude" part for me to set to music. I decided to go ahead and do it, since any composing is great for practice . Anyway, here there are! I wrote all of these in maybe..oh, I dunno, 2.5 to 3 hours, with some breaks. They don't have any dynamics (well, a couple might) but I figure I'd show 'em off here anyway .

I used a variety of techniques to write these, all depending on what the poem was, of course.

Here are the poems:

Water Droplets

Hour glasses,
The sand trickles down from the hand,
The sand hatches small
Engravings into our eyes,
Which lice take over and blur our vision.

Some refuse to see,
But that does nothing,
Except isolate you in
A small little box
With Chicken.

2. RECYCLING

Wet Glove,
Thy face of stone,
Drip, Drip”¦ Drip. Drip. Drip.

My brains are dripping
Out my ears.
Clouds fall on my head,
Like heavy rocks.
Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank!

3. BOREDOM

My nose is uncomfortable
Lips dry, Chapstick!
Chapstick like a chopstick,
Exact.

Plunk!
A stone into a puddle of holy water.
I need to take a shower,
”¦”¦”¦”¦”¦”¦”¦.in holy water.

4. SUNBURN

Each cheek, a campfire
Let’s roast some
Marshmellows. Golden Brown.
Golden Brown. Golden Brown.

I am a lobster hear me squeak.
Thy red shell tender and
MEAT, FRESH MEAT!
Sizzle!

5. SAND

In my ear, Come Out.
Little grain, Come Out.
It latches on and
Never lets go.

In hair. Dry, like a dead
Sea urchin soaked in
Rat blood.
Comin’ Round the mountain when she comes.
Comin’ Round the mountain when she comes.

6. LIGHT

Twiggly shadows creep down
The hall,
They eat my dog. CRUNCH!
Lunch is waiting with pink lemonade.

I can see.
I can see.

7. YELLOW

I burn up ants with a magnify glass.
We swim near the lake, on the
Dirt with the dead bass.

My cough is getting
Louder,
My shoulder blades are,
Caving in.

8. INTERLUDE

9. SLOW

The chipped joints,
Spin the wheel,
Zap. Squiggly lines turn me
Into a hostage.

Crank. The coffee cup tells me
It is time to finish
The water”¦ Gulp. Gulp.
And below are the pieces! I'd add the midis....but the 9 .mus files almost take up all the allowed space...perhaps later I'll post them up, if anyone's interested in them.

Damn...7 or the .mus files take up ALL the space! I'll post the last two in the post below this one...

Interlude and Poem 9...

Oh, and please keep in mind I wrote most of these pretty late last night, and again, very quickly, so they may not be my best work ...

Eh....triple post....sorry 'bout that .

Anyway, I compiled all the short little pieces into one long, fragmented piece . This way it's easier to download and listen to! Though I suppose if you wanted to view them individually you could as well.

Here's the .mus and the .midi . Hope you enjoy 'em!

So I listened to a random sampling of several of the piano pieces. The Interlude is quite well written, I like the pace and a lot of the pianistic effects.

But in the other pieces, it often seems like you oscillate back and forth between very fast and very slow tempi, which makes for a rather disjointed effect, especially when the music suddenly slows down. At those points it just feel like the bottom falls out, and the piece just goes flat. If you could do something to maintain interest in those segments...

The piano quartet is COMPLETE!!!

Please note that I will not review the following without a very good reason:
1) MP3-only posts: no score + outside link = bad deal. Especially true because I'm on dialup when at home.
2) Shoutbox or PM spam: excessive shameless plugs get very annoying very fast.
3) Pieces written in a short time or with little effort: if it's not worth the composer's time and energy, then it's not worth mine either.

well usually I was trying to conform to the poems ....perhaps that could explain it a bit?

Still... some musical continuity would help. Remember, you don't have to match the words exactly - short interludes are OK!

Also, the poems don't look nearly as manic-depressive as the music sounds...

he kind of wanted me to match the words exactly. But yeah, I get where you're coming from.

Yeh as a fragmented piece it isn't bad...

I think you could probably combine it into one whole without the fragmentation though. Maybe make it some sort of elaborate etude. The sound colour and soundscape is definitely there to do something like that....

Good work!

I kind of made it to accompany him speaking the poems, so they were supposed to be quite separate, or at least not meant to be one piece. I was writing these extremely fast, too, usually just inputting the chords with my left hand on my keyboard or just inputting everything on the keyboard, using the mouse to change the note value. I didn't have much time to edit them and think about what to write .....I definitely like the interlude the best, though .
