Assimilation

For crickets and floorboards.

I recorded the sounds myself, and then manipulated them in ProTools. This was a class project. Not as good as I'd like, but I was working under intense time constraints.

Boy (my kitten) was fascinated by your music. It sounds neat... also not over emotional Have fun with your class projects. The transpositions and stuff could have been more delicatedly done.

An assignment I have just gotten in my Into to Computer Music class is a bit like this, Chris. We have to make a piece of Music Concrete, using sound effects and the like, and manipulate them like you have done. Creating a musical-sounding piece out of everyday noises and sounds can prove to be quite the task.

Your transitions certainly could have been pulled off better... the piece sounds like just a series of soundfiles, with various effects on them, all strung together. It's not too coherent as a piece of music. I would've liked to hear you line some of the sounds up to form rhythms, rather than just repeated sounds on top of each other. But it was certainly and interesting listen!

At first I wondered if this was going to develop... but it did. (No disrespect meant but) it reaches deeper when I'm drunk (as now). I'm perfectly happy with musique concrète and this is fine though I'd have liked a few variations (quiet and barely obtrusive) closer to the beginning. Rests and silence...echoes (in quietly repeated moments) can be so engaging....

I personally feel that the material might have produced more in the old analogue days when real-time adjustments/ tape cutting and splicing/ were possible but I also succumb to the idea that we must move on to these new techniques.

I particularly liked the development at 0:45 and that made it. There's always a temptation to repeat a clip/loop on a computer ( difficult on tape unless you multiple-record or copy it. Here, all worked. I liked the episode at 2:36 except I have to say that at 3:00 it started to pall - this twiddling of filters etc is okay to the uninitiated but I know what's going on, so I was glad it moved on a bit!

Fine though.
bests,
M
