An Attempt

Ok guys,

I've never written anything like this before so i have no idea whether its any good (the piece doesnt even have a title).

It begins and ends with solo piano, I then try to build up the melody with strings (which on midi are the same as sibelius playback and sound awful >.<), percussion and the piano playing a support melody. I then introduce a bass and electric guitar (same as strings, horrible) to the piece. It moves on to another melody for some variation, before going into a guitar solo. After this one of the previous melodies re-enters. The piece ends with the piano playing the melody from the beggining of the piece, and then concluding on a slightly different melody.

Like I say, I've never composed anything like this before and the quality of the playback, midi ect is shocking. I'd appreciate any feedback - nasty or otherwise

Thanks,

Ferret

Hi Ferret.
Hmmm, I don't really know what to compare this song to. The drum beat makes it sound a bit like 80s music such as Depeche Mode or New Order. I like the section with piano (up to about bar 68) - thought that sounded good. The guitar solo was ok, but I didn't really like the GGGGGD figure you introduce at bar 72. Thought it sounded a bit annoying and repetitive. I thought there should be more/louder drums in this section. Not sure about the ending either.... I think maybe you could shorten it a lot after the drums cut out (maybe down to even just 1-2 bars). Hope that helps

My biggest criticism of this song is the simplicity of the drum part. You could have done a lot more with the drums. First of all, try to switch up the rhythm from time to time. Even if its just in drum fills, it will help, believe me. Also, drummers can hit more than one thing at a time. Just try to make the drums more interesting is all.
Also, as previously mentioned the GGGGGD theme is rather repetitive and could use some variation. Sections like that are great for "conversations" between instruments, with one instrument taking the lead while the other plays the theme and then vice-versa. You seem to understand this concept but didn't take it far enough in my opinion.

Hope I helped.
