Aunt Irene

This is one of my first ever compositions that actually was written down and not just played. I started this a couple of years ago in Notepad, Played with it some in sib4, then again in sib 5. I took the midi from sib5 and played with it in Sonar home studio and then again in Sonar 7 Studio.

About halfway thru this process, my Aunt Irene passed on and this piece became dedicated to her. That was last summer.

This is my first time doing any kind of changes to the midi with the pencil tool in Sonar, so I know that this can still be improved upon.

This is total white music..Not a sharp or flat to be found. The original name was Roller Coaster, because all it does is go up and down and returns in upon itself without ever really going anywhere. But one of the fondest memories I have of my Aunt was a day spent at an amusement park going on the rollercoasters.

It is a trio for Flute, Cello and Piano.


The original piece is over 13 minutes long. This is a condensed version at 6 minutes.

Hey Ron,

Really enjoyed this one. A very interesting piece. I got the amusment park thing but I found myself wanting a little part for your aunt. Like where everything kinda clamed down and just tipped the hat a little bit. But, hey its not my piece its your and overall I really enjoyed. Very interesting instrumentation and i think you are creating some nice colors with them. Again great piece. Very You.

We are always plugging our pieces into eachothers posts but i changed my quartet a little check it out.

I can listen to some nice pentatonic work. Also some motivic work done there!

The interplay between the instruments is great and well balanced!

Actually, this is almost 'orthodox' and doesn't quite have the Ron-esque sound! Sometimes even this can be a good thing!

I was hoping you'd get to one of mine. This is a bit of a change for me and doesn't have my signature all over it. Just don't get used to it. I stole a whole bag of sharps and flats from a friend and plan on using them a lot in the near future!!

"Whoa! A piece devoid of dissonance from Ron?! I dont' believe it!" was my initial reaction. I actually was kinda of hesitant to listen to this when you mentioned that it's entirely white music. But then I started listening and realized that despite the lack of dissonance, this is still very much your style. I rather like this one. It's of a good length and it never feels like it loses it's direction (whcih occasionally happens with your pieces, I must admit). I'm not a big fan of C Major but this doesn't really sound like C Major. The tonal focus isn't on C. At least, I don't think. It's amazing you can keep something so consonnant, so interesting.

I guess to be technical, there are flats in here just because it is in the key of E b major. But on the score there are no flats or sharps or naturals. It all stays within the key. I am glad you liked it.

lovely piece Ron! it seemed very mathematical, yet you capture what you were portraying extremely well. not the true Ron style, but enjoyable nonetheless. when youre CD comes out you better give me a signed copy!
