"Chant and Savage Dance" for solo flute

I wrote this piece in a few days working on and off (maybe an hour at a time?), so there are bound to be some silly mistakes here and there!

Basically, I am trying to depict a fictitious ancient pagan ritual ("Rite of Spring," anyone?). I don't really feel like Finale GPO does it justice with the dynamics and rhythmic accents, but hopefully you get the idea!

There is a drum sound that occurs twice, and it is supposed to be a loud foot stomp. Finale GPO doesn't have a foot stomp sound, so I had to settle for a taiko drum.

Enjoy!

Sound: Chant and Savage Dance MP3b.mp3
Score: Chant and Savage Dance PDF.pdf

I quite enjoyed this. It's definitely sounds appropriate for what you wanted.

The only thing I didn't really like: when you went back to the chant (I am assuming the slow was the chant), did it have to be almost (or completely, I forget) exactly the same? It sounds like you got lazy.

The other thing I didn't like: I can't play it.

Good job! ^_^

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I did get kind of lazy toward the end. I'll try to spice it up some more so that it isn't an exact repetition of section A.

Haha! My sister plays the flute as well, and she says this is way out of her league, too.

Please tell me that m.17 is supposed to be quarter=120 and not half=120?

EDIT: and flag your single grace notes. :p

Yup. Half = 120! I showed it to another flautist friend of mine, and she seems to think it is doable, but very, very hard.

Sorry about the grace notes! For some reason, Finale doesn't do it automatically.

Thanks!

And she would be right. I'm sure someone could play it.

Would the effort required by the flutist to learn to play it be worth it?

No. It's pointlessly difficult.

I suggest changing the grace notes to 8ths insead of 16ths.
and yes, Finale does add the little slash through grace notes... just press ";" (or "G" if that's how you made your grace note) a second time and you get the slash through the grace note.

You can also set it up to do that automatically in the global document settings.

Wow

Beautiful melody ... middle section works but doesnt develop sufficiently, same goes for the repeat of the primary theme. The whole thing is certainly workable but don't be afraid to kick it up a notch, particularly with such a fabulous theme to work with. Excellent use of pauses!!!
