Choir Piece

The first new piece I've written in my old way. It's a piece I wrote after watching Cold Mountain, and I find there's a detectable influence of that score on this piece. I got adventurous with the harmony, though. I wrote it with a fiddle line all through, but it sounded synthy and shite, so I muted it. This is not my best work, but I've got to start somewhere in rehabilitating myself from the damage academia has done. It's a step back toward soundtrackiness from art musicness. All I want is the sound, honest reactions and advice I've received before from the people here.

Soundtrackish indeed, some basic voice leading, a bearable choir sound...might be good for a background or something...

It does sound like a soundtrack and is very nice to listen to. This piece reminded me of your woodwind quintet in the way the music moves in a more chordal-block formation. I think the harmonies are nice but individual voice-leading/counterpoint would take the very nice harmonic progressions you have to a whole other level!

I've become ever more aware of my weakness in the area of counterpoint. It's just opposed to my thought process, somehow. But I wonder: Are you necessarily talking about activation of texture, changing the character of the piece entirely; or just changing the voice leading and leaving the piece unaltered? Preliminary lookings-over of the notes don't reveal any huge voice-leading errors. Open fifths were aimed for, often.

No, I wasn't really talking about voice-leading "rules". I was mostly talking about the dense blocky nature of the piece. I just felt that eventhough you were going for a sountrack type piece more individual movement withing the parts would help create more dimension while keeping your intended harmonic progression. I also don't think more individual movement would completely change the character of the piece. I just think it will add another level, if you will.
No, I don't think the piece needs a complete write over maybe just a little reworking unless you are completely satisfied with the piece as it is. If so, then you are good to go.
