Clouds (recording included)

Hey guys, here's my newish piece that I don't recall posting when I finished it

I wrote it basically as an impressionistic piece, as well as an experiment with some different (ie jazzish) progressions

Any comments appreciated

I thought a lot of this was really nice. The harmony around 0:30 begins to sound a little unsure of itself, due primarily to the removal of the triadic grounding present in the previous section. Nice use of the disruptive pedal note later on to keep the listener on their toes. I thought the ending was too prepared and decisive for such a dreamy piece - perhaps just finish on a slowed, drawn-out version of those 7/9 chords?

I agree with Mike completely here.. the ending not "could" but rather SHOULD have been anything OTHER than that straightforward diatonic ending.

You could easily lengthen this piece into a more substantial work. It explores the upper register and those harmonics and stopped tones beautifully.. so why not contrast it with something darker and lower?

And I also loved those "disruptive pedal notes" as Mike called them. There's something to do with those as well.. a tightening of the harmony.. bringing the pedal tones into line, slowly, with the upper harmony.

By the way, did I say that I loved this?

Oh, and I'd really really love to see a score. I don't know much about writing for guitar, despite having had a classical guitarist as a father.

Mike: I will consider changing the ending, I hadn't really thought that much about having a really drawn out ending, I guess it makes sense though because the piece itself kind of draws on that kind of tension, and it would make sense to end it with a related form (or something of that nature ).

The harmony around 00:30 you mentioned I intended to have a tense(ish) affect on the music, I thought it led better into the next section

Yeah, I pretty much agree with what's been said. The use of harmonics was excellent, and the piece was very interesting, but ending on a triad was just kinda disappointing. Perhaps an arpeggio of a major 9 chord in harp harmonics or something would be more appropriate.

interestingly i can spot several elements in this piece resembling traditional japanese folk music. basicly the whole chord progression you use is pretty much japanese apart from the ending. very unusal use of the guitar indeed, it has a very floaty feeling that i really appreciate although i miss some sort of emotional foundation to it. the whole thing is a bit rapid for a meditative piece. no beginning and a sudden 'out of character' ending. maybe you could consider adding a few more chapters to it, its a really great approach , it would be a pity leaving it last only 2 minutes... i would love to hear more! definitely thumbs up for this one!

Im just going to say this: I absolutely adored this piece. Im still listening to it now, but I absolutely love your exploration of harmony. I have goosebumps...damn it, the phone ringing just gave me a heart attack and ruined your song...haha, I meant to say - I love it, Goosebumps on my head!?! of all places...and Its beautiful.
