Oh crap, I'm supposed to start the next competition, aren't I?

Uh...I'll get back to you soon. I will do it, I'll just need a little bit of time, it shouldn't be too long...

friggin movie themes grr...mumble, mumble.

In all fairness and honesty, Competitions should be a contest of composition skill...not innovation. That';s why these radical ideas like mixed chamber, poem-setting, and movie theme won't be participated in as much as something simple! Can we not have like a string quartet competition, or a concerto competition or something?

Well, if you do something like a quartet, the contest becomes rather difficult to judge. Which type of piece would be better, a slow modern one or a fast classical piece? Who has the more skill, the atonal quartet or the classical quartet? I think have theme is for the best because it allows for more styles to be used without fear of prejudice. If they can create the mood with their style of music then it's all good.

Nick - I have been authorized by Mike, seeing as he is the author of them, to give you a couple of disciplinary e-spankings if you don't get your thumb out of your rear and get stuff done.

I'm the author of disciplinary e-spankings?

Oh well, I guess it's one of the many examples of my creative output.

Say, if it's not 100% yet, why not we have a single-act opera/operetta/musical contest? I know 2 members who are already in it and it should be proven fun besides, it's a max example of showing of skills!

He is right. A single act opera does show a lot of skill but they take a long time to write. What kind of opera would they have to be?

That sounds fun, but again hard to judge. If you were to open it up to all styles of theater music, you'd have to open to everything, from pop/rock musicals to large operatic envisions. From classical style opera to avant garde. (Practically asking if Sweeney Todd or Hairspray is better.)

And, also, since a performance isn't easily accesible by all of us, then it would be a nightmare for the judges to have to listen to MIDI while following the score. It was different for the art song, since that was only about 7 entries ranging 3-7 minutes. But think about even 5 entries about 30-50 minutes in length!

While it's a good idea, I think it might be a little broad. Something that might be a bit more managable is musicalizing a scene, much as they do in the BMI workshops. For example, take from the classic fairy-tale, Beauty and the Beast, and choose a scene that we are to musicalize.

Of course, then, you run into the same problems as I described above.
