if we did a quartet piece, would it be all 4 movements? or maybe they would limit it to a rondo, or a minuet/scherzo?

Keep in mind that the chamber ensemble proposal from the other thread required at least one string and one wind instrument. No standard ensembles here! [/b]

*ahem* excuse me.

I thought I had a shot at this! Why can we not have a simple competition like Concerto, sonata, or symphony??

We should have a concerto competition... Hey shut up NO MORE PIANO CONCERTOS for now!!!!!! That's all there is now! We should have more woodwind(brass concertos and, of course, violin/viola/cello concertos.

About the two options, describing a scene by music is always awesome, but what would we pick to describe? Should the judges pick what we should compose of or would the composer choose it himself?

Because it's unfair if someone has something already in the works. And because sonata, concerto, or symphony is NOT necessarily simple. That kind of project literally takes me years, for example, at the rate of about half an hour to one hour of work per week. (And speed isn't everything... Brahms spent 24 years writing his first symphony.)

The piano quartet is COMPLETE!!!

Please note that I will not review the following without a very good reason:
1) MP3-only posts: no score + outside link = bad deal. Especially true because I'm on dialup when at home.
2) Shoutbox or PM spam: excessive shameless plugs get very annoying very fast.
3) Pieces written in a short time or with little effort: if it's not worth the composer's time and energy, then it's not worth mine either.

Thumbs down

Come on people, be a little open-minded; break free of all these classical structures and let's try the movie theme, it's something different and interesting. Maybe the whole idea of a competition is to challenge yourself to try and write something different and see how your attempt compares to those of the rest of the contestants.

Obviously my opinion is biased but I honestly think that it's worth a try, I see many people on this forum are very classically trained and very much fixated on that structured ideal, which is wonderful, don't get me wrong. But sometimes a little variety is a good thing, you never known what you'll learn from the experience.

Plus, all the competitions so far have been more or less centred around a structured form, perhaps if this one was for a movie scene then our composers could learn to lose the idea of "movements" and "sonatas" and try to actually write the music for music's sake, let the piece take itself where it wants to go without having to fit within any boundaries outside of the limits of the composer's imagination.

So let's decide soon people, the poll's been up long enough I think, let's just get a concensus and get going on it, but please consider what I said before you too hastily choose the chamber ensemble.

Looking forward to competing,

Exclamation

If the chamber music competition wins the votes, why do we have to have such a restrictive limit? Why not 5 or more instruments instead of 5-8?

BRILLIANT IDEA: Maybe we could write a movie theme with a chamber ensemble of at least 5 instruments! Now everyone is happy!!!

To piano player 18: I don't think a chamber orchestra would produce the same emotions and textures as a full orchestra. I don't think working out a movie theme(s) with a chamber orchestra would work very well.

To Canzano: I wasn't talking like "Ooh, piano concerti should end and become forbidden here". No, I think there should be more concerto variety (not just for the piano, whioch has the highest of highest of priorities.)

Well then that would make it a challenge!, and a good challenge I would like.

Also I don't want to do a movie theme mostly because it's the popular cliche. I mean why would I want to learn Beehtoven's Fur Elise when I can learn one of his many sonatas:?
