I don't want to write a symphony as it would take easily into the hundreds of hours to complete and at the moment I'm preparing for my grade 8 guitar, learning to play keys, learning to sing, preparing for two teacher's diplomas and snowed under with school work. And, i can hardly ever get on the computer to notate what i write as my brother is always using it. Plus, i know symphony movements are meant to be in sonata form, something i have no experience with working with.

My proposition of a concerto makes more sense as it doesn't seem as daunting as a symphony, so more people would take part, it's not restricted to any era, there are baroque concerti, classical concerti, romantic concerti and so on so people can work more in there comfort zone, it's generally not as long a work as a symphony and therfore won't take as much time. Also, If you want to spend ages on it you can, if you like have ten minute long movements.

I think a concerto might work well - if we had a symphony competition, there'd be about 2 entries. A chamber concerto, perhaps?

how about a concerto for 10 instruments or less? that would keep with the continued rantings of chamber chamber chamber and with the other camp that says multi movemental

Concerto has the same problems as symphony.
What we need to do is have a further away deadline, and a slightly larger scale (possibly multimovement?) piece requirement.
Either sort out what it is by votes, or have it very open as to the ensemble, style etc.

How about this: Concerto in any style for any ensemble.
Minimum length 5 minutes, maximum 20 minutes.
Time limit around three months (debatable).

Other considerations;
must be playable
sensible ensemble, no bassoons septets or similar

What say you?

It would be really hard to judge what's playable or not if you don't know everything about an instrument you want to feature. Especially if you can't play it, it's hard to tell if someone else can if you don't know anyone else who's any good at an instrument.

WHICH, turns out to be a good thing. It's challenging, and it would force you to research the instrument, and you could learn more about it. Which is what competitions are for... right?
