I think minimum 5 minutes and maximum 20 minutes is a little too large a range, and might make things difficult for the judges. Perhaps 5-10 minutes would be better?

Also, we had at least 2-3 months for the Choral Competition, yet only 3 eventual entries. If this is going to be a decent quality concerto of at least five minutes length, I'd say more like 4-5 months, actually, just to be safe.

How about this: Concerto in any style for any ensemble.
Minimum length 5 minutes, maximum 10 minutes.
Time limit around 4-5 months (debatable).

Other considerations;
must be playable
sensible ensemble, no bassoons septets or similar

What say you?

Mark

Who says a bassoon septet isn't sensible?

I think we should make a poll on what the new competition should be, but I agree on the time limit.
The poll would also let us know what kind of participation to expect.

But, from what I've gathered, was there not a big turnout expected for the chorale competition but only three actually submitted their pieces?

Yes, that was pretty much the case.

Hence the 5 month deadline for any large-scale competition we might be thinking about.

I think someone should get around to making a poll.

At least polls have set dealines

I am personally of the opinion that 5 months is an outrageous amount of time to leave a competition open.

I am well aware that not everyone is capable of composing a work to their satisfaction within a more limited time-frame, but having it open for half a year is basically pointless. With all the new members that will show up and all the older ones that will leave, it will be nigh impossible to keep track of all participants and have any meaningful date for "No More Entries" and such...

5 months just seems excessively long. On the other hand, I like the idea of a bassoon septet so much that I may just have to go write one now. I'm serious; what an awesome ensemble.

The time scale required to complete a work does vary from person to person, but perhaps 5 months is a little excessive. Would 4 months be better?

I'm liking the idea of a concerto, though. Writing concertos can be a useful exercise.
