You know I was so impressed by the quality of entries for the band competition. I had about 10 composers that worked hard to complete a score is little over a month. So...even though I will be leaving out of town for two years...no access to the YC forums. I would like to start another band competition, but this time bump up the volume. (Cash and recording prizes!) This time I was thinking about giving two-years to complete a symphonic suite (approximately 3-5 movements). This suite would have a topic...which I thought about having an America theme, but I thought since their are people from so many different countries to paint a picture with music of their country they live in. Express the joys and emotions associated with their country.

The first movement would consist of an arrangement of their nation's song or anthem.

The second movement could consist of a dance or ballet.

The third...a march!

The fourth a description of a particular area of natural beauty in their country.

The fifth an exciting finale to top it all off.

Any input or ideas? This would be a considerable large amount of work, but I promised some of the composers that I would give more time to complete the competition. So October 16, 2009 would be the deadline when I could get back from my trip...I'll be ready to jump back into the groove! When I get back...I will have time to present entries and MAKE SURE they get sightread and probably performed since I had so many PERFORMABLE pieces with the last competition!!!

The 2nd Annual Havenwood International Young Composers Composition.

Each year I will try and do something different...like a piano concerto or a small ensemble competition.

It's not really annual, if the next one is 2 years away.
Sounds like a good idea though.

I don't think it's wise to be so limiting in the movement scheme of the pieces, but that's up to you.

Do you know people who can perform these things?

Yeah...but it will be annual after the two years so...I'll just call it that.

Yeah...I think you are right...I shouldn't be so limiting, BUT I would like for it to be a multi-movement suite!

Alright, for all you who were interested in the Celtic composition idea, you may, if you wish, vote for such an event for the February/March competition. It would be "Original Tune Based off a Culture". It could be fun.

Here's an idea:

you find a video on Youtube (you meaning the person hosting the competition) and have people score music to it.
What would make it even more of a challenge is if the YT video was from a movie.. e.g. Jurrasic Park (like a 5 minute clip) the winner would have the most original but still goes with the clip.
