How are these entries supposed to be scored? The CMC10 theme statement has three items: a farm, November, and deer hunting. What is the point of the paragraph setting the theme if it is not to be followed even loosely?!? I'm sorry, but IMO, neither of the entries I can vote on are even close to the stated theme.

The description of the theme is to help the listener and the composer get a feel for the direction that they should be working in. Interpretation is a key factor in the process. So, the voting must be based on interpretation. The question you should be asking of the pieces is, "which one has interpretted the theme the best?" And, in all honesty, it will be a very subjective thing (especially considering that "objective" doesn't exist, but that's for another time).

In general terms I don't disagree with what you say. But the the CMC9 winner chose a specific theme and then gave a different story so the theme is to be reduced to simply "some killers murder some people somewhere sometime", is that it? Not a point really worth debating further as I have the option to not vote.

Keep in mind that how you interpret the theme also comes into play.
