Hello. I've recently been taking advice from whomever responded and came up with my latest work: A concerto for Flute and Orchestra.

I'm not quite sure why nobody has commented on this yet! Being a flautist myself, I'm very glad to see a flute concerto! Fantastic work! I really liked the theme. I find that often, pieces don't have enough theme, but yours was great, easy to latch onto and enough content to develop. I think you could even develop it more, especially on the cadenza. Unfortunately, I don't have enough knowledge to comment on the score or orchestration, but on the musical side, I thought it sounded great! Keep it up!

I'm afraid I've only had time to listen to the first movement. Based on this I think I need to comment on your orchestration (otherwise I am very impressed).

While it is fluent and makes sense, two issues arise from listening to this piece:

1. At times it was hard to distinguish between orchestral flutes and the solo flute. Merging the two groups of instruments in a concerto can often be effectively used, but here I think it blurs the overall construction of the piece somewhat. It may be wise to replace the orchestral flutes with clarinets (I think this would help the overall tone colour of the tutti orchestral sections as well), or to make sure that their parts have very little resemblance to the solo part.

2. Often I felt the orchestration was somewhat dense and overpowering. I have not heard many flute concerti, but those I have heard have kept quite light and delicate in the orchestra when the flute is playing, mostly in keeping with the nature of the flute. I think this piece at times could benefit from this, as it would help the flute shine without being overpowered, and provide contrast with the orchestral tutti sections - where you can be as loud and dense with the orchestration as you like (something that would be truly in the spirit of the concerto genre).

The writing is very nice, but the balance seems to be a bit heavy in the low register for me. Perhaps you were trying to balance the orchestra with the highness of the flute, but I hear too much bass. Otherwise, I really dig this.

Nice concerto! Reminded me of the Quantz Concerto.
