Creation (String Quartet)

I just got Sib5 w/GPO and this is my first new piece with it. I rendered thru Reaper to add some reverb as well.

I put a few hours into it last night and a few more tonight getting it right. It is very atonal and thus not for everyone. It depicts the creation when the Giant Albatros of Queztlan laid an egg that when opened became the universe.

Any and all criticisms and comments and insults are all welcomed and appreciated.

Here is the MP3

OK, not my cup of tea but the "craftsmanship" and "talent" within the work speaks "volumes". And I would never equate minimalism with - "easy". You have a "unique ear" for chords and "progressions" that I find very "interesting". You never know what is around the corner with your music. Even a bit "inspiring"...

I know you don't have your new computer yet, but when you can load more instruments, try layering some of the different string articulations on top of each other. For example the "marcato hit" on top of the "legato" string is a great technique. I think it gives it a bit more realism. I think it could use a bit more re-verb too.

Great work for the time involved - very impressive

Michael

Thanks for commenting (although I did twist your arm a little). Randy in the other site told me how to work with the K2 player, so I was able to add some reverb.

Listening to this again, I find this piece to be ------- I just don't know the words.

But I am trying to finish up the last movement of the other one and don't want as much atonality in it so it is good I got it out of my system in this one.

Thanks again
Ron

I found it very interesting, but it has the same problem as a lot of other modern pieces. There is nothing really to grab onto. No strong melodic or rhythmic motifs. Since it was on the short side I didn't get as lost as I do in other pieces of this type.

I did really like the beginning though (it seemed to have the strongest melody).

Well, this is really quite an amazing piece. If one wanted to depict a hyper-dimensional egg splitting open and releasing a 4-dimensional space-time continuum and then sprinkling it with galazies, this is it. I found the very long melodic lines of the piece very suitable for the theme giving it a peaceful inevitability - after all, being all powerful, the Giant Albatross of Queztlan doesn't have to hasten or worry.

I thought the reverb was fine although I am a fan of minimal reverb use so the various instrumental parts stand out.

Herb,

I updated the piece with more reverb tonight at some point. I'm not sure if you heard it before or after.

I think you heard it after the update though. This piece was also my entry in a Halloween competition which I know I will not win, but it was fun to compose.

I see that you got the joke as well... I'm glad.

Thanks for the comments

Ron
