Yay I'm #1.

I'm #1!!! Yay.

Well here it is my floaty dorian fun!!

Name: Duet #1

Composer: Karl Nord

Ideas that went into the piece:I composed this piece using two chords over a dorian scale and a move chordaly the whole tone scale. I tried to go for a floaty airy feel. It was based off of a picture I found on the internet its on my soundclick.

The harp is such a delicate instrument and I wish I could have had this recorded but....no harp players in my area sadly and finding a marimba player would be a challenge as well. So I went with Garritan. I have to say I'm decently happy with it.

Anyway.

SoundClick artist: Karl Nord - Band page with free MP3 music downloads on SoundClick-The Audio

Below is anything else I think you'll need. Including the picture I based it off.

I'm 2nd. Yay.

This is just a rhapsodical type duet for clarinet and flute.

Name: Duet no. 1
Composer: Casey Rafn
Ideas went into the piece: I've been listening to a lot of Prokofiev piano sonatas lately.

Attached is a score and a MIDI file for reference.

Ill be 3rd then
mine is for violin & cello

Name: Duet in Grave

Composer: Caleb Ontiveros

Ideas: actually the majority of this was written in Montana...

The .pdf is rather low quality, but it should work. The midi does not do justice to this piece. The cresc. & decres. are nonexistant.

I also attached a sunset I caught in Montana which I somewhat based it on.

mp3 at Duet in Grave - eSnips, share anything sorry that I keep changing it...

I'm 4th.

Name: Menuet et Rondeau en Sol Majeur pour deux Bassons

Composer: Luke Mathers

Ideas: Well, I originally intended to compose three movements, but I ran out of inspiration and left out the the first Allegro movement (I wrote the movements backwards). The piece is written in a more classical style, but with Baroque-style ornamentation (mordents start on the note above).

Attached are the scores, midi files, and links to the mp3 files (I'd prefer that the judges listen to the mp3, it's much better quality than the midi).

Menuet: Menuet - eSnips, share anything

Rondeau: Rondeau - eSnips, share anything

(Unfortunately, my dynamics don't work, so they'll only appearin the score)

And I figured that I'd attach a picture like everyone else is doing.

Behold the power of number 5!!

(or not)

Name: "Nonsense-Scherzo" for Bassoon and Piano, in G, Opus 10

Composer: Miguel Bulteau

Ideas: I've been doodling things like this on my piano. So as I had to compose for this competition, I decided "why not?". I've been reading The Annotated Alice, (both Carroll's Alice books in one, with annotations and explanations by Martin Gardner), and I've been planning an opera on the story. This could well be an étude of awkward but "listenable" harmonies suited for such a queer but childish world.

Yes, I KNOW the ending's bizarre and unexpected. That's what I like to do, so pike off.

MP3: Here.

As it seems to be trendy around here, a picture to go with it:

My entry started as a Bb clarinet duet using a tone set, F,G,A,B,Bb,Db,Eb,E chosen for no especially deep reason. But I switched to clarinet and viola for a more interesting timbre combination which put Cb's into the viola part. For those who insist on a suggestive title, this piece could be called "Bitter Memories". I later added a livelier section (not using a tone set) after the slow initial section so this name may no longer apply - a simple "Clarinet Viola Duet" should suffice.

The midi file is total garbage - sounds like two tone-deaf bumblebees having a fight - might be good for lease breaking. The mp3 is at

Lucky number 7.
To compose this I sat down at my keyboard and ran a few ideas across the keys, hit record on Sibelius and improvised with the ideas. I then added a Violin to the piece and fixed the piano. Then tweaked and tweaked until I was all tweaked out.

Here is the MP3

Here is the score (not all that pretty I know, but it gets the idea across)

Work title - Duet for Two Bassoons, Op.26
Composer - James H. Householder IV (MusicManJ4)

████▓▓▒▒░░ ░░▒▒▓▓████▓▓▒▒░░ ░░▒▒▓▓████▓▓▒▒░░ ░░▒▒▓▓████
Background:
This duet was one I began several months ago but never finished. I based it highly on classical style, (it even reminds me of a particular composer, I just can't place him, anybody have any ideas?). I had the first two movements, but writer's block settled in and for the life of me I couldn't figure what to do about the third. When I joined Young Composers, I found the games and competitions and decided to participate in order to help me getting back into the groove of writing since I hadn't written much at all in the past year. When I saw the Duet Competition, I was particularly delighted since it would give me an incentive to finish my old duet in due time. So here it is! Movements III and IV were composed since the beginning of July to conform to the competition requirements, but I originally intended only three movements.

I. Vivace soave - D major
This first movement is in a perpetual state of development, themes come by and by morphing into the next section as they go. It is very playful throughout, and even ends quite suddenly as if it has decided to jump out a window in a light cartoon.

II. Andante scherzando - E major
The second is a very light and playful movement which never strays too far from its opening theme. Even between its B and C sections comes briefly the A theme in inversion before returning to B.

III. Largo melancolico - furioso e irato - pesante - A minor
This movement is based on a recurring rise and fall pattern, everything that goes up, must come down. This movement is the oddball of the bunch, the A section being particularly mesto, a deep and resolute sadness. Out of this sadness comes a sudden fury (illustrated by the B section), but this fury is short lived, and quickly dies back into hopelessness again. In the C section comes contemplation, what can be done to end the sadness? Many mischievious ideas are tossed about, but once a fair one has arisn, what is to be done with it? A confusion ensues, which but leads to nowhere but sadness once more. Again, soon enough comes the same fury, this time in reflection of the recent failure, but it is again short lived, yielding once more a hopelessness that may never cease.

IV. Presto giocoso - D major
The final movement is intended to sound like an organised mess of sorts. The A theme can be split into three further sections, the first of which is based on arpeggiated in hemiola, the second is slightly more melodic, and third is a return of the first but with variation which leads into the next section. The B section is a short Fughetta-like entity in G minor. After its brief episode, it begins again in A minor and finally leads back to the A section, which is increasingly more varied until the end.
