This is where Thomas will post the 5 winners of the competition. Down the line, he will inform us as to whose piece has been picked to be played in September.

When Thomas relases the verdicts, and not before, the composers may post up their own pieces (midis, sib, mus,mp3,pdf, etc) or they may ask Thomas to do it for them, if they lack the ability. The composers are not required to post up their pieces, unless they are picked for the concert in September! Also, the composers may post up the comments recieved on their piece if they choose.

Good luck to everyone!

Later edit: And the winner is...

johannhowitzer, with his piece "Journey to the Oasis"! Congratulations!

5 winners? Do you mean there will be 5 finalists and 1 main winner?

Yeah... this is the first mention of this I've heard. Five also seems a bit much, considering only eight people submitted works.

I was under the impression that there would be five finalists and one winner. Not that it really makes much difference anyway.

No, that is correct. I will pick five finalists from the eight, and then out of these five, a winner will be chosen.

When we started, we did have nineteen people...

To anyone whose submission is in digital audio format (MP3, OGG etc.) and wishes to have it hosted on the YC server:

Send an email to mike[*at*]youngcomposers.com with the file attached and your forum username in the body of the message. Please use the same email address as the one associated with your username, so I can verify you are who you say you are.

After Thomas is finished judging, I'll then upload the files to the server and insert links to them in the original post of this thread.

So I assume that even though the results aren't in that we can talk about our pieces right? I had no idea there
would be so few people submitting works. The possibility of me having my piece played and my feet held to the fire is looming over me.....

Hmmm.....

So what did you guys do? What was your concept? Did you write an Elfman-esque cue, Williams, or did you go
your own route? Or did you take another path entirely?

I didn't really write a "film" cue as much as I wrote an orchestral piece with a very obvious program.

Oh wait....

I've already lost. I just looked at the instrumentation list. No trombones? No Horns? No Tuba?

Bah!

You know, it's good to know what instruments you can or cannot write for when entering a competition...

And, no. I think we should wait to discuss our pieces until after Thomas posts the results. Remember that Thomas also views these forums, and we don't want any biases to occur. This is about the music, and how well each composer has portrayed what they want to portray.

Aw, don't feel so bad. At least you've got one more orchestral work under your belt!

My piece, Journey to the Oasis, runs 6:40 long, and the scene is a man's journey across a desert. Each section in the piece depicts a specific part of his journey - encountering a mirage, crossing a high dune and seeing a vast desertscape before him, and other such landmarks. Since I had the scene vividly in my mind, I guess you could say there are cues. You could certainly animate or shoot a scene to go behind it. However, it is also very suitable for the concert hall, standing as a piece in it's own right.

I have several flute solos, one rather nice solo for viola, and the saxes and clarinets get some time in the sun. I treated the saxes as horns, since the horn range is larger and the GPO doesn't have a sax patch. I used the piano for incidental coloristic effects, nothing soloistic.

The piece begins in the key of G minor and wanders in and out of some nice tonicizations. Near the end, there's a temporary modulation to C major which quickly turns back to G minor, and then the final chords are heard in C major again. Thus, my timpani are pitched to the G on the bottom line, and the C above that. The snare drum is heard quite a bit during the "walking" sequences, which are rather lumbering and weary-sounding.

Once the competition ends, you'll get to hear my piece and find out how the story ends!

...You know, if you want to bother rescoring your thing a little, and Thomas doesn't mind, you could transfer the horn and trombone parts to the saxophones, and drop the tuba unless the basses can somehow pick it up. Transcription's always an option. I understand we're past the deadline, though - shame you didn't notice this a little sooner, eh?
