I'm trying to be idiomatic, personally, but my piece isn't turning out easy at all.... I'm about 0:34 into it. Into sketching a section that I have no idea where will go in the final product, that is. But it'll go somewhere, that I know.

4 hours of hard work later/ I'VE FINISHED woohoo. I'm very happy with it. It's a simple AABAC thing, the B section being an improvisation on the main Volcano theme.

Now for polishing.

I might do Prelude, or maybe the underwater palace one.
Maybe.
How much licence should be taken with the original? Leave it much as it was? or...?

If you can somehow prove that you used the theme as a basis for the piece... Then mangle it behind recognition!!
