Hi everyone. I read over your guys' forums and it seems like a really constructive place. I'm a 19 year old trumpet player of about six years of whom usually plays lead trumpet in jazz and concert bands. I sat down with Finale and put together a short movement of a suite I'm considering to write which is for a brass quintet (two trumpets, french horn, trombone, tuba). Any and all criticism and suggestions are greatly apreciated, even if they are negative, please give me your feedback. I will take the liberty of going through the pieces on other threads and giving my personal opinion on them, so I can give back and not just take

Well, first off, this really belongs in the Chamber Music section, but I'm not a moderator so I'll let them handle that.

As for the music itself, you have a very broad and powerful opening. You have several nice ideas declared up front, and they slowly evolve until around 1:10 the original feel of the piece has transmutted into a more myterious moving theme. This whole piece has a definite feel of constant motion to it, even though it is moving quite slow for most of it.

The only weakness you have is that you draw out the short figurations you have that lie beneath the melody longer than you ought. I refer of course to th epassages aroudn 0:50 and right near the end. You should consider cutting those short or putting more melodic material over them to cover up their repetiveness.

very intersting piece! reminded me some gothic music, or the sonate & canzone for brasses by Gabrielli. it has a greatly resounding sonority. just that the mood is very similar throughout the piece, and i felt being prepared all the time for a great climax or a great event which never happens, because in the end all gradually vanishes. anyway i liked as it is and i can live with my own little frustration

I'm not a trumpet player, but those octave jumps near the end seem difficult to perform and monataneus I think you could do more with that to make it more interesting.
