Free improv - drums/trombone

Dig.

Some excerpts from last weeks spontaneously improvised duo session. Drummer is Mark Segger.

Be careful...it's OUT.

i'm no professional, so you might count me out and i'm not saying it because i need atention.
i listened to the small pieces, well first thing that i thought was - couldn't they all be put in one file, layered.i thought that would be a beast of a sound. then i somehow missed long notes, something bach have called 'general bass' (i might be wrong naming it). one could call it rhythm as well. i liked the start of the fourth and the sixth one and the eight one (my favourite), because of intensity. the thing about free improvisation, that always gets me in, is this crazy multi angled movement, like cutting the time in which small and intense spaces (yes, plural) come to live. the best example of what i have heard is sten sandell trio's 'oval'. or kieran hebden's and steve reid's sessions.
it's nice work, but i think the third one would fill very nicely in,or a double session for these small spaces to be more intense and vivid.
regards

For most of these, except for #8, I felt you (that was you on trombone I assume) and the drummer were in a private world that I wasn't sharing.

It reminded me somewhat of arriving late and sober at a party so I didn't know what happened earlier and everyone else had been drinking for hours - I didn't fit in.

Aside from my not getting most of the music (or because of that ), the sound often seemed thin - perhaps another instrument in the mix might help.

Fair enough - and thanks to all who took the time to listen.

I expect this stuff is quite foreign to most listeners - and, to be honest, this was just an impromptu jam, nothing too serious. Playing duo with drums is extremely difficult, though I think there were definitely a few happening moments; the intent is more about the conversation, interaction and energy in the music than anything else. A complicated concept - one that will only develop further, the more we play together.

Robin

You had some stuff like this on your website last year. I see that you are still experimenting. Great stuff here.

This is normally taken as an insult here in the states, but it is said to you as a compliment.....

Damn you blow!!!

Ron
