The Goldberg Variations -- Simone Dinnerstein

Is anyone familiar with Simone Dinnerstein's new recording of The Goldberg Variations? I heard a bit on the radio and almost passed out it was so energetic and awesome.

I haven't heard it. I don't think I could hear a non-Glenn Gould play Bach

That's a shame, gms. Gould's performances, whilst seminal, sometimes leave Bach's abilities unspoken. I have odd favourites of his, but usually find a few pieces on each recording objectionable. I suppose that's the flipside of going for deliberately provocative interpretations of Bach's music. He also has this bizzare tendency to play some passages ultra-stacatto, seemingly at random, which I find highly annoying.

Exploring other performers' interpretations is really interesting, particularly for baroque music, where there's such a huge spectrum of possibilities.

What about Martha Argerich's recordings of Bach's partitas? I think they are quite unique, although she's not quite the Bach player like Gould, but she is an incredible pianist, and she interprets Bach very nicely
