Harmpit

"Harmpit" is sort of a progressive metal-type piece, but there's a bit of a classical influence in there. I'd just like some critiques.

Just listen to "Harmpit" and tell me that it doesn't make your bowels shake at least a little. I dare you.

Not a bad piece at all, quite listenable. I can hear a classical influence and a metal influence. I'm not a big fan of metal so perhaps this means it is too musical to appeal to a hard core metal fanatic.

Why the name "Harmpit"? I don't hear "danger" as in "harm" or anything that stinks as in "armpit". A clever name to be sure but I don't think it suits the music in this piece. Why not a name like "Ripcord"?

Lol, I actually take everything you said there as a compliment. If you think that something is too metal for yourself but too musical for a metalhead, then I would hope that it's just both musical and metal.

As far as the name, the song started off as an attempt (albeit an unsuccessful one, but nevertheless) at depicting somebody being chased by, I don't know, a guy with an ax. Yeah, an ax. Like, a nine-foot ax. Yeah. Anyway, it's supposed to be the excitement and relief generated from the juxtaposed feelings of impending death and the cosmic "phew" that flows through you when danger passes. It ended up just having the rhythm guitar hit nothing but an E power chord for about a minute, but whatever. Anyway, I tend to give my songs pretty random and stupid names, like "Harmpit" and "Chalice of Malice". Just a little something to make you chuckle, even though the music sometimes has that effect anyway, fortuitously.

Yeah. . . thanks for the kind words.

I love metal and this is great. Isn't it a pity we can't all get musicians to play our music. I bet this would be great live.

Whoo!!

This brought me straight back to Castlevania - it's EXACTLY suited to be in a Castlevania game; the style is precisely appropriate.

Loving the sound and the title, and the production quality you've got is also admirable, I enjoyed it very much. The string samples you used are much less convincing than the others, but it's a minor complaint.

This is nice gothic metal at its finest. Do you like Nightwish, perchance?

You know, that's the second comment I've gotten about the song sounding like Castlevania, and I've never even heard the soundtrack from the game--perhaps I should.

I used Guitar Pro 5 with RSE for this, and it has "realistic sounds" for the guitars, bass, and drums, hence their sounding better than the strings.

I haven't really listened to much Nightwish, but I am right now (I had some on my HD), and it ain't bad. This song was more influenced by a guy named Terry Syrek (I doubt you've heard of him, but he kicks major ass) than anything else I'd been listening to at the time. You should look him up. He's better than me.

I've heard Terry's work actually, and yes he's pretty awesome. Castlevania is actually a whole series of games, but you should check some out for the music. I think you'd like it if you find the right tracks.

Wow. . . you're of a dying breed, listening to Syrek.

Any hints on finding the better Castlevania music, or do I have to embark on an epic quest in solitude?

You can embark in solitude, or you could perhaps add me on some messenger and I'll....resolve the problem for you.
