Jazz (2nd try. New piece)

Thank you to everyone for helping me out in this new genre for me. I took the first riff out of the other one and started anew. I tried to incorporate all the suggestions that were offered, but any more would always be helpfull.

Here is the MP3

I actually had heard your first attempt at Jazz but didn't comment since I felt the same thing as everyone else who commented on the song. The horns really were too busy, and it was jsut a bit too much to all comprehend at once. However, I see you have taken everyone's criticisms into consideration with this second one. And I think it was definetly for the best. The horns are definetly less busy now and they seem disjointed now as they did before (even when they are playing two differnent melodies simulatenously). I really did enjoy this one quite a bit more then the last. I would have liked to hear more development as most of the song seems to follow along the lines of one theme but maybe that is just how jazz is supposed to sound. I don't know, I am really clueless when it comes to looking at Jazz from a technical view. However, from a general listener view I really did enjoy this one quite a bit more. I look forward to your third attempt at Jazz.

This is infinitely better than the last one - much clearer direction and energy.

I kind of like the fact that you've skipped all the old stuff, and leapt straight into this stream-of-consciousness, more avant type of writing.

Hard to do without a background in jazz writing, but this works fairly well. I'd still say there could be a little more cohesion between the horns, but it's a lot more together than it was - at times they play off each other quite nicely.

Something else I like, is that I could hear this being completely improvised - or perhaps the first half leads straight into some collective improv. It'd be hard to tell, which is cool.

I also love the drums, about :20 in they freak out just enough for me to think it could be a real drummer....You (somehow) managed to get the 'players' (the drummer especially) to sound at times as if they were actually playing with/reacting to each other....very cool.

That has alway been my impression of jazz. It is improv'd to the max. I have tried to leave some imprefections in to try to get that feel. From what I have read so far, a score in jazz is just a suggestion. I know that's the way we always played the Blues. Just get a few riffs going and have fun. Thanks for the listen.

Ron, this is much improved!

I know nothing about jazz, as Robin knows, so don't hold my opinion really high in this case...

But I see that you went to less busy, that you fixed the mixing quite a lot, and that you've stoped using completely all the time the sax. There is an interplay between the sax and the piano along with the other instruments as well.

Don't have anything else to say really... Jazz is not my territory, but you are imporving day after day my friend! And this means something!

well dont' take the score is just a suggestion in jazz so literally, there are moments where it might be suggestions- chord changes for improv solos and what not, but for the most part if something is written down with accents and dynamics and all that jazz (sorry i just love using that line when talking about jazz in general) you still have to adhere to it. There were times when jazz was/ is still highly organized so just keep that in mind when you work on more ideas, but this was much better than the first idea, looking forward to hearing more
