Jessome/Segger/Gill - free improv

Okay, here you go:

Some excerpts from a recent trio show. All music is freely improvised and spontaneously composed.

Robin Jessome - trombone, mutes
Mark Segger - drums, cymbals, percussion
Thom Gill - guitar, toys

I know most of you fear are unfamiliar with this type of thing, so I ask you to be open and to put aside your musical expectations and prejudices and try and find something you may actually enjoy about this. We went in with no preconceptions and the music developed in the moment. It's exhilarating, working without a net and allowing the energy of the music to dictate it's direction...wildly liberating. You should try it.

I've only listened to the first one yet (listening to the others now), but: Brilliant! You guys rock. So colourful and varied. I especially loved how it always seemed to walk on this fine line between order and chaos, like the seemingly random impulses of the beginning of the first piece out of which slowly a rhythmic pulse emerges (but always keeps a "lively fuzziness"). There's almost always a hint of a "metre" that keeps it together, but always a bit broken and never too much in the foreground so it would become blunt.

Thanks for listening! I do appreciate it I'm glad you got something out of it: it's exciting as a performer to play freely, but it's hard to know, sometimes, if anything is getting across. It's great working with these guys too, such big ears and immense sense of musicality that it makes it really easy to let loose and just blow.

Thanks!

*bump*

I'll do this once....in the hopes I'll distract you long enough from JosePablo's "masterpieces" to listen to some actual creative music...

Never sure what to make of improvs, I don't listen to them much at all but I'm trying to open my mind!

I mean it sounded a bit disjointed alot of the time, as you'd expect, but there were certainly a few moments that caught my attention and held it for a while. I guess thatsthe beauty of an improv with talented people playing, you just get those magical moments when it all comes together and its all the sweeter because it was done on the spot.

Nice work, I'll certainly try and listen to more performances in this vain.

Hey! Thanks for listening guys!

Fox: I'm glad there's something in there for you to latch onto and appreciate. This sort of thing can be a bit opaque for new listeners.

Will: Glad you like it. Thom is a KILLING guitar player...wildly creative.

Thanks for listening - the support for real live creative music around here is quickly waning.

I think the first one is possibly the most successful. Any other opinions?

I'm all about the jam, this is pretty awesome. I wish I had a group to do this sort of stuff with, but most of the people I know are scared of even trying some improv.
