Ligeti - Stairway of the Devil

Or at least that's what I figure it means... l'Escalier du Diable, etude no. 13 for piano by G. Ligeti.

Godlike.

YouTube - Ligeti - Etude No. 13 "l'Escalier du Diable" - Libetta

Yeah, but learning to play even the easiest of those is an exercise in patience and an ability to detach yourself from your desires and extraneous thoughts for hours and hours on end over a very long period of time.

But yes. They're frickin' sweet.

EDIT: It's great to be able to see the piece played by a live musician, but know that there are better recordings of it out there. His tempos are a little too wobbly in some of the beginning parts for my tastes. (Then again I shouldn't really talk...it would take me God only knows how long to get myself around a piece like this.)

too much rubato! also on youtube is a performance by greg anderson...me like...even if the video is way more produced that classical is used to...

this semester i decided i wanted to learn etude IV: fanfares. i didn't practice enough (yet), can almost get through it at about 2/3-tempo. fanfares was my favorite for a while, but in obsessing over it i've overdosed on the saccharine harmonies (ha!)
