Listening List: Flute (Contemporary)

Yeah, I intended on listening to Density 21.5 but I haven't been able to get my hands on a Recording.

Any more suggestions?

Hindemith's flute sonata. I am studying it with a flutist. There is also Takemitsu's Air and Masque, the latter being for two flutes.

I second for anything Ian Clarke... his stuff is very crazy... Fourthage mentioned Great Train Race and Zoom Lube (funky!). There is also Hypnosis, and plenty others. I managed to find some decent YouTube recordings in case you haven't heard his stuff before...

Strangely, after all my listening what I'm writing is basically a Tango for flute and piano.

I'm considering whether I might not make it string quartet and flute but for now, at least, flute and piano.

I'm excited about it :-) I'll post a copy in like a month's time when it is finally finished.

There are lots of recordings on youtube. If you're looking for an actual CD, the one I have and is on "Varèse - The Complete Works" (Riccardo Chailly: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/Asko Ensemble. Density 21.5 is played by Jacques Zoon). I don't really like the amount of vibrato in that recording though. It just doesn't really seem to fit Varèse.

EDIT: Arrgh, I just listened to that recording again and "I don't really like the amount of vibrato" is a huge understatement. I HATE it. It's ugly. Don't buy that recording for Density 21.5 (even though the other pieces on the CD are fantastic. Especially Déserts, where it's one of the very few interpretations which actually include the electronic interpolations.)

For extended flute technique, there is Berio's Sequenza for Flute. Naxos has a recording of all Berio's Sequenzas at a great price.
