Listening List: Flute (Contemporary)

Hey,

I'm wondering if any of you would be so kind as to help me create a list of works for/featuring contemporary flute...

SOLO if at all possible!

Oh, and by Contemporary I mean really anything from around Debussy's time through to now. So anything Stravinsky

It can be Chromatic, 12 tone, minimalist, experimental, etc
Anything without strict adherence to tonality.

So far I've only listened to:

Syrinx - Debussy
Du Tanzt Alleine - Stephen Cronin
And most of Michael Gandolfi's work.

Thanks HEAPS.
Chris :-)

There are plenty of good modern flute concertos. Two I know are the Rouse and the Penderecki. The Rouse is awesome - a bit depressing though, and the Penderecki is a bit dull at times but still good. I've heard that Nielsen's flute concerto is very good as well. I'm not sure about repetoire for flute alone or flute with piano.

Maybe try some of the pieces listed on these pages:
Flute concerto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flute repertory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

in a neo-classical and impressionist vein, you have:
Sonata, By Prokofiev. Tender/Playful. A personal favorite and that recording sounds great!! I recommend the finale and the scherzo for some extremely FUN music.
Sonata,, by Francis Poulenc. Cut of the same cloth as the Prokofiev one, I feel
Pierre Sancan's sonatine, (gorgeous little piece) Henry Dutilleux's sonatine

Boulez also wrote a sonatine. And don't forget Messiaen's La Merle Noir. (they both sound more ''contemporary'')

You should have no problem finding any of these. People hold them in quite high regard, generally speaking.

edit: I came across this by chance. Pretty cute!

First thing I think when I hear the first three/four notes is Stravinsky - Rite of Spring.
Am I the only one who feels this?

Any more suggestions of unaccompanied works?

I'm researching for a piece I'm about to write...

So far the winners are the Sancan Sonatina, the Dutilleux and Debussy's Syrinx.

Anyone have any theoretical information / background, electronic scores or otherwise of these pieces that they may want to share?

Well there's Edgard Varese's "Density 21.5" and Toru Takemitsu's "Voice", both for solo flute. I have scores for both of them.

Hah, I was going to suggest Varese's piece too

There is a piece by Lyell Cresswell called "Anake" for solo flute, which is quite nice, and if you're looking for difficult stuff, I am fairly sure that there are pieces by Ferneyhough for solo flute and by other composers as well. Carter may also have a solo flute piece (I've no idea, though).
