Lute Sound Playback (Finale 2007c with GPO)

OK, I'm not a big MIDI/Soundfont/Sequencer guru. I know how to run Finale, and I have a basic idea of how GPO works with Finale. I've now run into a situation where I don't know how to get what I want, or if it's even possible.

Here's what I want to do: I'm writing a piece for two violins and continuo, and I hear in my head a theorbo (a big, honkin' gnarly lute with bass strings) as one of the continuo instruments - harpsichord, 'cello and violone (double-bass) being the others.

I want to use GPO Solo String sounds and harpsichord sound, and in the best of all possible worlds I'd like a good lute or guitar sound for the theorbo, but there is none available in GPO (not too surprising, though disappointing).

I tried to specify that the theorbo part play through General MIDI, but it appears that you can't mix and match GPO and GM - you can do one or the other, and I've grown to hate MIDI string sounds, so that leaves only GPO as an option.

Is there any way to do what I'm trying to do? Do I need to try to get a lute soundfont into Kontact (which I know next to nothing about)?

Any advice would be appreciated. Just don't call me crazy for even wanting to do such a thing. That much I already know.

switch to Finale 2008, where you can mix both MIDI sounds (Softsynth) and GPO sounds.

actually, Finale 2008 comes with "Garritan Sounds for Finale", a considerably library with a wider range of sounds.

In musical criticism, when issues of craft and technical consideration are set aside, what remains is more subjective. However, until technical issues are dealt with, the subjective portion bears considerably less weight.

Honestly, Finale 2008 is considerably less hassle than 2007 was.
I barely used Fin'07. I just had too much trouble with playback with it. I stuck to Fin'06 until Fin'08 came out.

Wait! There's a solution. You may or may not be aware that you can alter the registration of the GPO harpsichord; it has a lute stop. Just open the keyboard console for Garritan, and click the uppermost yellow key to activate the lutestop.

I hope this helps.
