Marzurka in G Minor

Hello YoungComposers
How are we all doing today.
Good i Hope.

Well, two nights ago, i sat at my piano and improvised for a while, which then lead me to this awesome motif, which then lead to a melody and chord progression, which then led me to turning it into a Marzurka which i filmed myself playing yesterday, and posted up to Youtube Yesterday.

Because of the short time i composed this in, you have to understand that it wont be the most tidiest of performances, however, for the timeframe in which i composed it, i think its rather funkalicious.

2 Important Notes before i give you the Youtube link:
1: PLEASE TELL ME IF IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING YOU HAVE HEARD BEFORE, AND THEN BACK IT UP PLEASE...especially if you can link me to a PDF or something to support your speculation.
Im thinking it sounds too much like Granados' Marzurka...anyone agree?

2: Ignore my technique if you are a pianist. It was a simple throw together...most of it is improvised.

The main theme you will hear a tiring amount of times is written down, and the middle section which is kinda of like a sweet variation of the first theme is also written down.
Everything else that fills in the gap is improvised.

I havent put it thru to Finale or anything like that, because im unsure of whether it sounds too much like something else.

There is the link.

Youngcomposers.com - i hope that posting a youtube link is ok. Please let me know if its not.

I must say i realy like the middle part. The main theme isn't to my taste, but the slower melodic middle part is realy great, very heartfelt. As for reconizing it in anything i couldn't say. I think you mean litterely here with plagariatism in mind?

I actually think the middle part was too slow, and I enjoyed the fast parts better. But both were good, and amazing for only a couple days work.

dude! this is awesome! i found all the different sections wonderfully entertaining and full of passion. minor comments: at 2:00-ish i didnt like the notes at the top register of the piano, just me. also the transition from slow section to fast seemed to work better then the fast to slow. but all in all, fantastic job in such a short amount of time. posting a score of it soon??

haha thank you all for those comments. Nice to see a mixture of posts. I didnt even realise that people had replied to it, hence my reply is delayed. *shakes fist at YC for not sending an email * ....only joking lol.

Now, with the main theme...do you think it needs expanding. I believe it to be too melancholy...and repetitive. And if so...how do you think i could go about doing it.

yes, i believe i have plagerised Granados in his Marzurka (opus number is unknown to me)...but if it is...i will be utterly upset...coz i like this composition.

Uhmm....and yes...a score will ONE DAY be uploaded lol.
Two days ago, i went back to it again, and just improvised for a while...particuarly the transition from the slow section to the fast. I have really hurt myself in doing so, coz when i compose at the piano (improv) i usually hammer it out nail and tong. But with this, i have come up with a great bridge to the main theme again. So, the score will take a LONG time to produce, as i am going to be really careful with it. I have started to write it out on paper...but ive kind of run out. (importing a new manuscript book soon hopefully).

Any more comments would be great...but remember lol...this piece is only...5 days? old now.
So dont be too mean

thanks again guys for the comments.

In my opinion the main theme doesn't have a clear caracter. It isn't organic enough for my taste. I realy enjoy the human/emotional side music can portrait and the main theme lacks it by an inch. You might say it doesn't flow. (looks real badass now). I think this piece can be great. I hope you post the endresult soon. It has a bit of that chopin-feel i so adore and admire when composers can evoke it.

I played this at McDonalds last night for a fundraising event.
I played REALLY poorly, and a note to self is "dont play a piece you havent finished writing yet, and especially amongst people who dont know much about piano technical ability"

It was meant to be light background music, but hahaha...it was more like Hammering Hardcore Rhythmic Blasts.

Oh well - Most historical pianists have all had bad reviews written about them, and have all had their bad days at concerts and such. Thats where I am encouraged - Rubinstein was not appreciated by Clara Schumann when he was a child Prodigy...and Paderewski had his bad performances. So yes. I feel better.

Thanks for the comments and criticisms as well guys, I will take them into account.
