Ahah... sound really interesting. I don't know if you've touched or experimented microtonality until now but it would really fit to your imagination type.

EDIT : the more I listen to it, the more I find it intelligently done !... I've a done a similiar (but very more subtle) effect in one of my piece with temple block folowing the microtonal melody of the solo flute... it's made a very interesting global timber sound !

EDIT 2: I guess I really learned something from your music today !... that's really good to feel !... instead of teaching to only others.

EDITY 3 : you really have to write a piece of your own for a percussion ensemble. I don't know how old you are and what are your possibilities to be played... but I could deal something at my university if you write such a piece for 3 or 4 percussion players. I can't promise, but if the score is perfectly written... I know the teacher well and some of the students and I could make it performed in a concert here at University of Montreal.

Interesting, eh? That's what you say when you think it's terrible. That's ok, I don't expect to be Bach when I'm just starting out. I've never done anything with microtonality. My experience with it goes as far as my formet teacher mentioning it in passing. It's something I'll have to learn more about! It certianly seems like something I'd enjoy.

...I'll look all those up on wikipedia later. What's an "intelligently"?

I'm 19, and there's almost no chance of anything I write getting played in front of a live audience any time soon by my own devices. I would, however love to write something and have it played. Provided it's good enough.

It's funny you should mention Percussion. The noly instrument I've ever learned to play is the drums, which I did when I was 7. I'm terrible. I'll certianly try to write something.

...how long should it be? How many musicians should I write for? Oh god I hope wikipedia knows these things

You've almost composed nothing, truly !? I really heard a very original voice through your orchestration. Writting for percussion is one of the most complexe thing for non-percussionists... but as I said... between 3 to 4 percusionnists that can have differents instruments of course... like a drum set has many.

And when I write interesting it more be I was astonished. Maybe what you wrote wasn't conscious - which is still good since you at least have the intuition of doing it - but it was to my taste very creative !... and that's a part of what the composition is about, isn't it !?

Are you studiing anywhere ?

As I don't know the rules, here: Can I change the note durations (to use my 8-16-8 pattern) and get some movement in the piece?

Well if you're talking about some of the intervals that I chose and my use of dissonance to build up before a change, or my use of repeated patterns than it's intentional, but if there's any other neat things going on there it's entirely unintentional. In fact, I don't even feel confident about saying what I did incase I I get something wrong and what I thought I was doing is entirely wrong, but whatever, I'll be famous yet.

Not yet. I'm planing on going to university next year for composition, but I don't have enough credits to get in. however, the stupid way the school system works in New Zealand is an entirely different matter. I have to do a course with a corrospondence school this year to fit 10 weeks worth of school into a month to get in in January, so I'm a little pressed for time considering the correspondence school hasn't got back to me about my aplication yet.

Wow ! You're from NZ !... I dream to go teach there since I'm a teenage. That's really one of the most beautiful country ! I'm intrigued... I never heard of any great composer from NZ yet... there is probably I guess... do you know any web site where I could hear some of their music ?... I don't mean people that redo baroque or classical music... I mean international stature composers.
