"Nameless": some electronica-type noodlings

Marius' recent Spectraball soundtrack reminded me of my compositional roots - electronic music. I doubt many of you are aware that I actually began by composing electronica and only then came to dabble in "classical" (i.e. what would be termed "art music").

In other words, blips and blops were my first love, and to a very large extent, I've failed to move on.

This piece is just something I did for fun. It isn't really intended to be taken seriously, especially given the pervasive retro feel.

Oh, and the voices entering at :00 and 0:38 sample reverberated and pedalled piano chords from other pieces I have written. Fascinating, I'm sure.

Hah. How strange, I never really pegged you to be that type. Well, not like I can really criticize this, since I know nothing about this type of music. But trusting that your "dabbles" are pretty skillful, I'll just say this is too for shits and giggles.

This really sounds like some video game music definitely sounds weird, in a good way. Almost like space or alien or something hard to explain, but cool overall

*giggles uncontrollably*

Well clearly I couldn't pass up leaving a comment on something you were inspired to make because of my random wanderings in the style. It's actually really fun to listen to; kind of groovy.

The textures are usually quite pretty, though they sometimes come off as too thick and phat, so maybe a little dieting would help them. Also, the transitions between some of the sections were a bit on the jarring side, so I don't know if that was intentional or just an oversight.

Either way, a fun little romp in your home style. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you all for kindly commenting.

The quasi-insane textures and jagged transitions were entirely deliberate, Marius. I was actually thinking a little of Ligeti's "sound mass" music in the case of the former; it seems I only really tend to use significantly dissonant material in an electronic setting.

More may be coming soon, depending on whether or not I consider it fit for public consumption...

You sure a full of surprises, just like Nikolas and his Jazz & Metal pieces.

I would never imagine that you had once upon a time written something like this. It sure is groovy Have you got any more ?

I feel as though I've just "come out" as an electronica buff.

There are a few more, mostly from years ago. I'll probably put them on the music management system when it arrives.

Thanks for commenting!

Fair enough, Mike. It makes sense then.

I laughed at the "coming out" comment, by the way. I could say that my recent work in this genre is helping my "find myself" and such, but I think that might be pushing it. Although, speaking of surprises, it might be an interesting time to mention that I used to play in a metal band .

Anyhow, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Let me know when you put more of these up in the mysterious upcoming music management system, I'd love to hear more.

I'm digging the groove here. I'm specially fond of the abrupt change at 0:30ish, though I wouldn't have mind more development over the previous section. You could've gone for a heavy pulse/beat but instead you chose to go into a squarewave melodic-oriented section. I like how the sound seems to cut off, and the samples are raw-sounding.

Certainly, the cuts to new material help maintain a mood that leans on movement and rhythmic emphasis though the rhythmic itself is under emphasized to good effect.

I think in terms of structure three main sections can be identified, and the piece just shifts to each without much preparation. However, I think that's a good thing since they are closely related both in rhythmic and melodic/motivic work. I specially like the choice of sounds overall, and I think the groove is constant.

Honestly, make this longer, continue to develop it if possible. It just fades out at the end, and I think that's a shame. I was digging it, and it's too bad it's so short.

Good work.
