Actually, my improvisational vocabulary is far vaster than my classical repertoire. I know a couple of famous pieces, that's about it. And by a couple, I don't mean twenty, I mean like....5. I know there is a common conception that having greater repertoire will make one a better improviser, but I'm not so certain that is necessarily the case. If one knows all 24 major and minor keys, all their chords and inversions (or some subset of them starting out), and is willing to experiment with all the chromatic stuff "in between" those, you can find all the sounds the great composers came up with and more . Especially if you employ the principle of "self evolution" by recording yourself improvising and listening to yourself more than you listen to other composers' works.
