November 27, 2007, Improvisation.

Here's one of my more cohesive improvisations of late...sounds a bit Scriabinish or something like that... Enjoy!

I don't know who or what Scariabinish is but it reminded me for some reason of an old, 1920's detective movie or something like that. Black and white with lots of shadows yet still little flickers of good or hope. Maybe a dark gentleman's club... with decorated ladies...

Dark yet sophisticated with underlying elegance?

I think I liked this one better than your Beethoven improvisation. You seem to have the ability to improvise in a few different styles... which shows you must have either a big repetoir or some talent. I liked the first half or so a bit better. Not familiar with Scariabin but bits here and there reminded me of parts out of a Debussy prelude. Thought the 2nd half was a bit more disjointed and a bit less melodic. Nice job.

thanks for the comments. I like this one better also.
haha Scariabin. He DOES sound Scary sometimes. Actually, my improvisational vocabulary is far vaster than my classical repertoire. I know a couple of famous pieces, that's about it. And by a couple, I don't mean twenty, I mean like....5. I know there is a common conception that having greater repertoire will make one a better improviser, but I'm not so certain that is necessarily the case. If one knows all 24 major and minor keys, all their chords and inversions (or some subset of them starting out), and is willing to experiment with all the chromatic stuff "in between" those, you can find all the sounds the great composers came up with and more . Especially if you employ the principle of "self evolution" by recording yourself improvising and listening to yourself more than you listen to other composers' works.
