The Number Five!!

This will really push creativity.

The rules are simple..almost too simple.

Pick 5 notes. Only five. You can use them in different octaves, but only five notes. (Ex: I'm using CDEFG) ((how corny, I know.))

No more than five staves. As little as one. Meaning you could use two pianos and a clarinet if that's your thing.

And just for the fun of it..no real reason, but the piece has to have the total measure count of a multiple of five. (Why not?)

Well let's see what we can come up with!

(must include some kind of score, .pdf, .mus, or midi., sorry no .sib.) Audio files aren't necessary if you can provide a .mus, I could make it from there. And I could provide a rough score with a midi or .mus file.

Hmm... I've never tried any challenges on here. What an interesting one. I don't know if this is what you want, but this piece contains 5 notes [B,C#,D,E,G] and it has 15 measures. There are 5 midi instruments.

5 is the magic number. This took me 5 minutes to make. Though I can't say it's marked at 5 bpm.

I tried a little renaissance-style choral snippet. I'm quite sure there are lots parallel fifths and similar stuff, but I'm too lazy to fix that.

It's D dorian/D aeolian using the notes c, d, e, f and a. It doesn't have bars, but it's exactly 50 whole notes long.

Thank you, although I believe mine was a little too silly. I like yours a lot too. I also like this choir version Gardener made. It reminds me of something from The Legend of Zelda, but so much midi music does these days. Well done. I like the choice of the five notes.

Ha, these are great. It's so funny what five notes can do. Really neat.

Here's my simple little thing using CDEFG.

It's kind of christmasy..and nursery rhymish. Two adjectives that just do not exist, but fit so perfectly.

Five Note Funk (C, Eb, F, G, Bb)
35 measures of bluesy grooves with some of the licks I often use in my own brass improv.

Bb Trumpet
F Horn
Bass trombone
Drum kit
Synthesizer (organ)

I'm assuming the drum kit doesn't fall victim to the five note limit since you never mentioned percussion staves.

Isn't the entirety of the Chinese folk music tradition based on five notes (the pentatonic scale)? Clearly that shows that five notes have a whole lot of possibilities. Interesting challenge.
