Opening .mus files

Hi,
I have Sibelius 2 (old, I know) and I'm trying to open .mus file's that I'm finding on the forums. I've downloaded the converter from the Sibelius website, but it then tells me I need to open the file in either Finale or Allegro, which are both expensive, just to open file's.
Any way around this?
Thanks,
Chaski

To view MakeMusic format files (.MUS files) you can download the free finale viewer called Notepad.

It is extremely limited for editting, but will view pretty much any file created in any of the MakeMusic line of programmes.

Can I also listen to the files in that then? Or use that software to convert the .mus files to open in Sibelius?

Yes, you can listen as you view the score.
No, I don't believe MakeMusic's free program (Notepad) can convert a .MUS into a .SIB.

Get it here

Notepad can export to midi, then open that up in sibelius.

You can always save as an ETF.

Suppose, but I only really use it now to listen to uploaded compositions in the .mus format, so it works ok.

You lose all of the formatting, slurs, and such; staccato are turned into half-duration notes, etc.

And isn't it only Notepad+ that can export MIDI, or did they do away with the paid version of Notepad?

If I'm not mistaken, Sibelius can open ETF files, so if you need to do any editing, you could import it into Sibby that way.

How do you convert to ETF? Can it be done in Finale Allegro?
