Orchestrating a piano piece

Hi,
I want to dive more into better orchestration and orchestrated one of my piano pieces. I would love to hear comments on it from people who did orchestration work them selfs.

Here are the links to the score and mp3. in the score, I included the piano version as well, so it's easy to see what I did with it.

pdf score: Box.net - Free Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Online Storage, Access Documents & Files Anywhere, Backup Data, Send Files
mp3: Box.net - Free Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Online Storage, Access Documents & Files Anywhere, Backup Data, Send Files

Best wishes,
André

Looks pretty good. I would have personally brought out more of the woodwinds in the sections where it's just the oboe competing against the brass (e.g. bars 19-22).

Also, try having the string players use some double stops in the louder bits, especially when there's a tutti going on.

Thanks. I added the oboe because I wanted to have a very intense melody. The idea was to give to trumpet some extra sharpness, not to set the oboe apart as solo instrument. Probably the oboe will not even be heard but the color will be different of both instruments together.

And doubles in the strings sounds like a good idea, i will try it out.

Trumpet + Oboe == Trumpet. (unless it's mezzo forte or softer)

Heh.. depends on the oboe players reed. O_O sometimes I have reeds that don't like me and only play ff....

Wait, ignore me. The only trumpets i know can can beaten out in the loudedness by clarinets. (Two clarinets... overpowering 7 trumpets. it was fun!)

Pffh, those trumpetists must have been 5 year old girls, or 93 years old men!

Are you saying 5 year old girls aren't LOUD enough?

And why 93? Lung power returns at 94?

I made a lot of changes in the score, even transposed everything up a major 3th, I will upload it soon but need to figure out how to make a better woodwind transcription in 28 till the end, not so happy with the ending yet.

Latest version

Hi,
I made a new version of my orchestrated piano piece "After work, Late at Night".

Here are the links to the mp3 and the pdf:

"After work, late at night" - mp3:
Box.net - Free Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Online Storage, Access Documents & Files Anywhere, Backup Data, Send Files

"After work, late at night" - pdf:

I put the piece in a higher key, so the oboe wouldn't be so low and thick in his solo, and the horn not so high (after putting it an octave lower as well).
i added some new strings parts and redid the woodwind section. I believe it's much more interesting now. This time, the mp3 isn't a midi bounce but played in on my piano into Garageband, using the Orchestra jam pack.

Like always, I love to hear comments to take out the errors.

André
