Peteris Vasks - Various pieces

A little bit about the composer: Pēteris Vasks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Te Deum for Organ,

This is just impressive altogether. It's got a German-school air to it, but it's something else entirely as it develops. There's a fugue in between which is pretty interesting, and overall the whole thing is a little more classical structured.

String Quartet Nr.4,

Just wow. I really can't say much but listen to it. It's got quite some punch to it. This sort of moves in the Pärt direction here with a little of minimalism throw in, but otherwise it's quite a different animal.

Dona Nobis Pacem for Mixed Choir and Strings:

I really can't explain how this sounds, but it's just a trip. Again, tonal with the uses of dissonances here and there to highlight tension, it's Vasks' specific style here again obvious if you listened to his other pieces. Very interesting handling of the Choir, a real must see live if possible but sadly he's not well known enough so performances are rare.

It's incredible that you just mentioned him, because I only yesterday found a CD with some works by Vasks for string orchestra and found it extraordinarily beautiful. He sounds a bit like an Eastern-European Barber of sorts, writing very lyrically for strings. I personally find him more interesting and his music more beautiful than Pärt's which you mentioned..

Anyway, thanks for recommending Vasks (I think you mentioned the name along with the names of Kreek and some other guy a while ago), definitely worth the listen

We've sung a piece by Peter called "Ar laiku Pukes Vist" in our choir last year. If you can get a recording of it, it is wonderful!!! Beautifully modern!!! Try it. It's a must!!!

Well, wouldn't you say that Palestrina is beautiful Renaissance or Mozart is beautiful Classical?
Unless he generally associates the term "modern" with "ugly" which is wrong...

There are moments in some Beethoven symphonies that sound pretty damn "modern" to me

What about that chord in the middle of the Eroica, you know what I'm talking about...............

:-p
