Post Playing midi using soundfonts without a third party software

Yeah. The question above. If I downloaded a game which uses midi files as their music, is there a way I can let a higher quality soundfont play the midi instead of letting the miserable "Microsoft GS Wavetable Softsynth" play it? I have a 100 MB high quality soundfont and would like to use it to play the music from the game. Is it possible?

If you have a Soundblaster series soundcard then it's perfectly possible as you just change the default sound-font set.

However, most modern soundcards don't have that option as soundfonts are somewhat outdated.

First you would need to change the MIDI playback device to whatever corresponds to your sound card's soundfont-enabled output. On my system, this is "SB Audigy 2 ZS Synth A". I think it's normally named as something which mentions the actual sound card.

Then, you'll need a program to load the soundfont into memory. This is normally provided by your sound card manufacturer on an accompanying disc.

Of course, this is all assuming your sound card is soundfont compatible. Moreover, this is also assuming you even have a sound card. Peruse this list if you're struggling on that front: SoundFont - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Actually i would be a bad idea really.

The music that you hear would be based on how midi sounds at teh exact settings (velcity, volume, mixing, etc). If you take out GM and put your own sounds chances are that it will be completely unmixed. So not worth the trouble really

Unless you replace it with a better GM set. I used the Utopia! soundfont set for a while, much better than what came with my soundcard and because it was a full set it was properly mixed.

Yes, I use a full GM set called Chorium. The sounds are slightly better than the default ones which came with my card, but they're not so fancy that music produced with the bank will sound overly odd on someone else's GM set.

Here's my solution but it may or may not work, but I think it will:

1. get midi yoke and get that set up
2. go into the sound settings control panel (WINDOWS ONLY! Sorry)
3. for default midi output choose midi yoke 1
4. open up synthfont (or similar) and set midi input to midi yoke 1
5. load up a soundfont
6. press the input button

i think this will be VERY slow, but it could work.
