A quick fun piano piece.

A piano piece I composed in a few hours to explore polytonality. Additionally for a short movie.

That was refreshing. I thought it was a little weird that there was a dotted rhythm when there are no dotted notes there. o.O

polytonality is being in two keys at once. Mainly it's done in the B section. There are dotted rhythms because it's "swung", you know, like they swing in jazz?

Nice Piece. I like the way u introduced the polytonality, in a way that doesnt throw the whole piece off track, and the whole piece is heard as a coherent, organic whole.

Since, thematically, there is not much to be commented on, but I must point out some technical difficulties in your piece. In many places, you require in the score for notes that are impossible for a single pianist with average hands

(the average hand in this context being able to reach an octave an a third AT EASE. {{Which is coincidentally, not that average, but heck}})

You might want to review your score for its playability.

Oh the whole: Great Job! I totally adored the way you put the sing feel into it.

Ok, first thing, don't use the 8va treble clef for the primo piano left hand. just write it in bass clef.

It was actually a lot of fun. I like the swung rhythm, though it might be important to actually include some indication that the rhythm needs to be swung in teh score, no?

I have to say that the only thing that disappointed me was the unfortunate returns to pure diatonic sonorities at cadential moments, particularly the very final cadence. I think your lovely clusters from a few pages back would have been a MUCH more fitting ending.

Another thing that bugged me was the lack of movement away from your home "key". The repetitive secundo part could ahve gradually moved away from the home key a bit. Particularly after that dramatic full measure rest... all of a sudden the music just starts over in the same key. A bit boring, to be quite frank.

Still a very fun piece.

In musical criticism, when issues of craft and technical consideration are set aside, what remains is more subjective. However, until technical issues are dealt with, the subjective portion bears considerably less weight.

I agree with QC. The cluster should be the end point. Took me by surprise, it did. This is the first polytonal piece I have listened without thinking it sounds like crap (just my personal opinion, no offence to those who love polytonality), good job. The swing rhythm is really refreshing to listen to.

Note: I've not seen the score, I'm just commenting by listening.

to David: I checked my score and I don't see anyplace that I don't see anything unplayable, and I don't see any chords greater than an 8th apart. Can you give me measure numbers?

QcCowboy: You are right, I should have thought about that. Thanks for the comments.
