Don't flip out on me. I got the impression you were appealing to enforcement of this rule as being a possible source of restricting people unnecessarily, thus getting them riled up. I apologise if I misconstrued you.

You are philosophising, though. Your argument has no basis in (legal) reality. Whether or not it is of interest to me personally or on an intellectual level is irrelevant.

It's really not necessary to go back through old posts, guys, but I appreciate the gesture.

I value your opinion, Anders, just as I value the opinion of every other contributing member on here, it's just that in this case I don't believe what you proposed is applicable to the matter at hand.

I apreciate that. Your apreciation, that is.

Was just wondering.. Does a CD constitue a full work? Would a track from a CD, then, be a sample?

No, each individual recording is a "work" in and of itself, I believe.

Y'know...some of us are trying to make a career out of performing/composing music. You'll be singing a different tune when it's your paycheck that's affected.

Singing a different tune... bwahahahha..

Anyway.. yeah. You're right, but still, I'm really having a difficult time coping with this (money+music) thing..

One thing though, if you cut out more than 3/4 of a piece you can post it on the internet. In Belgium it is permitted to post short samples of intellectual property. I don't know about USA, but I think too.

Using material for private use is legal, only if the composer says no you can't use it. People may copy songs for private use, because it is impossible for the law to control this, even if the author objects to this. The composer may ask for money, but again it is impossible to control the copying of songs. Using songs for economical reasons is not allowed.

So posting music samples is allowed, that's what I think. Whole songs are rather not allowed.

BTW: nice, cute cat!

Dammit, I had a page on US Copyright Law a while ago that stated the regulations regarding what constituted a legal smidgen of a work, but I can't find it. However, cutting out 3/4 sounds about right.

I think it's clear that YC does not qualify as an educational or scientific resource.
